Spotted this walking my dog & it felt like a perfect encapsulation of local political discourse here in Ottawa. (Pic isn't a statement on a politician, more of a statement on how we see politics.) Regardless, go vote! Advanced voting Oct. 16 & election day is Oct. 26, 2026.

This is a panel I wish I was moderating. Envy aside, go check it out. I've known Jed for ~2 years and he's sharp, smart and insightful—great qualities in a moderator. Oh, the panelist are good, too. :-)

A year ago in my #WIP I renamed an area from Cannon Hill to Powell Hill, losing a favourite line from a gun shooting thug: "I put the 'cannon' in Cannon Hill!" Editing today, I realized he can yell: "I put the 'pow' in Powell Hill!" I love it even more.

RED DRAGON was good, but THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (Thomas Harris) is brilliant. This scene with Starling and Dr. Chilton is a masterclass. Starling, Crawford, Buffalo Bill and Lecter get such depth that their stories are as compelling as the search for Catherine Baker Martin.

It must be the apocalypse. No, not politics or war or disease or the economy. My WIP is a fantasy-set love story. We're doomed. #amwriting

A reminder to our American friends that Montreal Worldcon 2027 is a great opportunity to support Canadian SFFH authors, publishers and readers, see a truly beautiful city and learn more about your Northern neighbours, and meet many Canadians (and others) who cannot as easily come to visit you.

Great crowds enjoying my neightbourhood of Centretown Ottawa after today's @fiertecappride.bsky.social parade. I hope folks who come downtown for work & never go south of Laurier got a taste of this amazing neighourhood (which, yes, is facing some challenges).

Continuing my tradition of buying a book of local ghost stories when I travel. This time: Charlottetown, PEI. Grabbed it at Bookmark in downtown Charlottetown. They also had a dedicated horror section with pals Nick Cutter and @daviddemchuk.com on the shelf.

View through the partially open doors of a not-yet-open Spirit Halloween is like something out of BACKROOMS. (I took this photo about a week ago, which explains the "Closed Until" sign.)

For the Gen X 80s kid in me, watching all these lightning strikes as a thunderstorm moves through Ottawa reminds me a little too much of all those nuclear war movies.

I've been living in Ottawa's Centretown for over 10 years now. It still gets me that there are buildings in this neighbourhood I've never noticed before like this one. Not exactly exquisite architecture, but still interesting and not so much like the bland facades you see down here.

I love the near-sarcastic literalism of this. I must have looked quite unnerving when I started laughing. Another reason I love living in Ottawa's Centretown. (Before you comment, yes I know that the word was put there as instructions for city crews to cover the sign.)

Let's F'ing go. This UConn alum saw UConn take its place among greats in women's basketball. But moving to Canada meant missing the W's rise. 25 years later I'm grateful TSN is covering women's hoops. I'm excited to root for both UConn alum and Tempo players. It's time!

After seeing the Ottawa Charge win against the Victoire, time for the first back porch writing evening of the season (plus dog, bottom right). I go outside and have a near miss with a bat. No bats in the pics I took, but they are up their and feasting on mosquitos. Good bats!

Bollocks. One, hardcovers are selling great, especially the ones that these days come with sprayed edges and illustrated end pages. Two, ditching hardcovers would absolutely gut author and bookseller incomes. You want to fuck up publishing? Kill the hardcover. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Out for pub grub at Centretown's legendary Pour Boy pub and found "PENIS" and "Boobs" carved into the table top. You never know what surprises Somerset West will throw at you. My fish & chips were tasty. Highlight, of course, was my brilliant, funny and stunning wife.

Canine diem! My dog is loving this unusually warm weather here in Ottawa. I'm glad he can't read the weather to see it's going to be cold and rainy for a few days starting tomorrow, but for now it's all about the hot weather & great smells in the air. (And barking at squirrels. Sorry, neighbours.)

More from the "Never know what you'll see in Centretown" file. Walking around Ottawa and saw these shoes neatly arranged on the steps outside a building along Somerset Street West near the Art House Cafe. No idea what the stories is, but that's Centretown for you.

Living in downtown Ottawa with its boring and drab buildings, it's easy to forget there's beauty in this city. Went for a walk on this gorgeous spring day and checked out the canal just waiting to be filled up again, Kiweki Point in Major's Hill Park and then down Sparks Street.
