In several European countries, including the Netherlands until fairly recently, asylum seekers claiming persecution based on their sexual orientation have been subjected to tests meant to authenticate their homosexuality, including the use of pornographic stimuli to measure a physiological response. Testimony isn’t enough. The state demands proof the body cannot fake.

This drawing starts from that apparatus. It asks a simple and brutal question: what becomes of desire when it has to prove itself before an institution instead of being lived. What becomes of asylum when it turns into a laboratory.

It’s an extension of an older colonial gesture, the one that has always demanded racialized and queer bodies account for themselves, authenticate themselves, make themselves legible in order to be believed. Europe imagines itself as refuge while producing its own protocols for verifying intimacy.

This work is part of a broader reflection on what it means to belong to Europe at an expanded scale, beyond bilateral relations alone, and on the ambivalences of a Europe that filters, tests, admits.

Lucifer Rising by Rick Griffin (with a little "help" from Gustave Doré); the San Francisco Oracle no. 7, February 1967.

A b&w poster design printed on newsprint toned by age. The central illustration by Gustave Doré shows Dante in the Purgatorio being carried up the mountain by a huge eagle. The frame that surrounds the picture is made of columns twined with sunflowers which are carved at their base with the numerals 666. stone The stone lintel is carved at each end with the astrological symbol of the Sun (a circle containing a dot); in the centre of the lintel is a rayed sun and an eye in a triangle. Between the pillars are a series of stone steps and stone letters which read: "Lucifer Rising -- A Love Vision by Kenneth Anger".
