UPDATE. There were reports that possible migrants were staying in the Marriott hotel. I can confirm that is NOT the case. Please dont attend the hotel. A number of concerned local residents spotted what they believed to be migrants going into the Marriott hotel. A number of you messaged me and asked me to come down. I spoke to the hotel and they agreed to meet me. Within an hour I was in attendance. Spoke to the crowd forming, who were all respectful and calm but concerned. The man leading the crowd was very clear they must remain in public land, stay calm, no drinking, no abuse. visited the manager and the hotel explained it was a Pakistani Cricket team staying. The cricket team coach came to speak to me personally and I saw proof (hotel were happy to provide). then went to speak to the crowd gathering of 40/50 people and confirmed with them and assured them that it was a cricket team. Immediately the crowd respectfully accepted that, called for calm and asked the rest of them to leave now. Within 5 minutes they were gone. The hotel manager was very thankful and actually was sympathetic to the local issues at the moment but just wanted her guests not to have to worry, which is fair enough. glad could do my bit to help the situation and stop tensions rising. But the government need to understand why things like this happen. It's not because the protestors and crowds are bad people quite the opposite. It's because they care deeply about their community and area and see it crumbling before their eyes. Local residents just want to protect the city they love in the best way they know how If the government don't get a grip on this boat crisis we will see this more and more.

A small clique of academics are accepting each other's papers for publication in top business journals in violation of clear rules to mitigate conflicts of interest (COl), claims a study on how "reciprocal handling" of journal submissions has led to a handful of scholars gaining "disproportionate control" over publication and career opportunities. Of the 1,585 articles published by two Financial Times (FT) 50 journals published between 2010 and 2024, nearly half (788) were written or cO-written by just 54 prolific authors, although these scholars made up only 2.4 per cent of overall 2,207 contributors, explains a paper published in Journal of Business Ethics.

On 20 August 2026, Ghent University formally notified the staff member concerned of the launch of a preliminary disciplinary investigation. As part of this process, the university is assessing whether there are sufficient grounds to refer the case to the competent disciplinary body for further consideration. Pending this preliminary investigation, Ghent University has suspended the staff member as a precautionary measure. The university cannot comment further on the specific details of the disciplinary case or the underlying arguments, in order to safeguard the confidentiality of the personnel file and the disciplinary proceedings.
