Why so much liberalism here?

As the title says, why?

All post I see about Isfaili genocide people rightly criticize Isfail for clearly committing genocide.

But move it onto another topic like China or the Ukrainian nazi proxy war and there is just so much liberal bull shit that sounds like it was written by a guardian contributor or reads like a press release from the white house.

Shouldn't anyone posting that be banned? They have hundreds of subs they can post in, they dont need to post their brainwashed liberal shit takes here.

There are leftist critiques of the Russian invasion. Jacobin interviewed a Ukrainian socialist in 2022, for example:

https://jacobin.com/2022/03/ukraine-socialist-interview-russian-invasion-war-putin -nato-imperialism. Slavoj Zizek is also critical:
https://kyivindependent.com/slavoj-zizek-putin-represents-the-worst-of-a -longstanding-trend-in-russian-history/

If you do "No True Scotsman" too much, you won't unite the British left - you'll end up as a tiny echo chamber.

1. Play infrasound to cure a young white elephant's autism
2. ????
3. PROPHET!!!

So suggests an article by Otto Rössler and colleagues (including the intriguing 'Anonymous Student') in the Elsevier journal Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0079610715000954

Free full text at https://lifeboat.com/blog/2015/06/is-it-ethical-to-heal-a-young-white-elephant-from-his-physiological-autism

Rössler is a chaos theory researcher also known for defending El Naschie in his unsuccessful libel claim against the journal Nature, and spraying his university with graffiti. The proposal was made that a human caretaker with a strong bond of love can deliberately "smile acoustically" at a protégé whenever momentarily delighted in the interaction. A young white elephant was chosen as a symbol and a challenge for the therapeutic profession. An infrasound "reassuring device" (like a commercially available infrasound generator [26] equipped with a once recorded natural bonding-type infrasound) was proposed to be employed. In this way, the holiest moments in a human playroom - never so far exposed to the public eye - could be reproduced in an elephant barn for everyone to witness and be moved in their hearts.

The elephant may then love to learn to speak, in the aftermath of his having taken the initiative in trying to reward his partner in a deep emotional connection between two free souls of differing speeds of operation and differing depths of thought but the same infinite affection for the other. Eventually, the nonhuman partner might become the advisor of a planet in need of outside help. But this will be possible only if the adoptee is never confronted with deliberate malevolence, as Jesus demanded for the holy souls of children.

The new partner of humankind would - it was argued - bring back the spirit of Mandela who was an equally foreign intelligence. The first author met Mandela's personal friend Neville Alexander as a youth. And Mandela likewise lost a child at age seven when they are still elephants-foreign intelligences ...

I also realised I could jog the ~2km from King's Cross to my work (http://walkit.com/walk/?city=london&from=london+king%27s+cross&fuid=4 24175_512795&to=1+fitzroy+square&tuid=391296_456015&rta =old&direct=no2#nogo).

With one week off for when we were in France, I now don't need to take my inhaler before, during or after the run, and today for the first time I didn't need to walk (other than waiting for traffic) to catch my breath.

Charles Watkinson.
Associate University Librarian, Publishing, University of Michigan

For Immediate Release, April 1, 2025: University of Michigan Press will publish all of the content on Meta platforms as a series of printed books.

University of Michigan Press, a medium-sized publisher of scholarly monographs and regional studies such as Amphibians and Reptiles of the Great Lakes Region (https://lnkd.in/gS69nebW) has embarked on an ambitious new project. Over the next 94 years, the Press will stop publishing award-winning books in the humanities and social sciences. It will instead devote all its efforts to republishing all the content on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp in print.

"We initially thought of asking Meta if they minded us using their copyrighted content," said Charles Watkinson, director of the Press. "But there was someone on WhatsApp who said that it would probably take, like, 4 weeks for Meta to send us all their stuff in PDF format. Also we didn't know Meta's address so we thought it would be better to take the harvesting route."

The Press is collaborating with Prestige Nail and Spa in Singapore to acquire the content. Qinfan Banquan, director of operations, preemptively apologized for potential issues. "Our bots can go a bit wild sometimes. If you find that your Instagram is not working for a few days, it's probably a rogue crawler trying to download the same post about Pink Pony Club six million times a second."

My UKSG 2025 starts with Beth Bayley from Karger on their journey since deciding fo head for OA in 2018. They've "tried it all": flipping, hybrid, transformative agreements, Subscribe To Open (S20), Diamond. There's barriers to adopting each OA business model […] [Original post on scicomm.xyz]
Trying It All

Flipping
Everything OA BUT APCs; mixed demand; journal/publisher sustainability?

Hybrid Journals
Another OA option; more OA articles BUT Not an option for all (£); much still paywalled

TAS/RAP
Less disruptive; more OA content BUT Mixed interest in TAs; equity factor

Transformative Journals
Easier transition; options for all BUT Overall little impact

S20
OA w/o APCs; easier transition BUT Long-term sustainability? (+ workflow)

Diamond OA
OA w/o APCs BUT Long-term sustainability?Lessons Learned:
• If we flipped it all, we might not survive (different communities + economic realties = instability).
• We need to meet communities' needs, not write their agendas.
• There is no magic bullet for transitioning to OA.

"My friend's claim seeks to apply a worn out law to a new reality. Books are different to other chattels (possessions) and the law should recognise this. Learned men like us, who have received a new heritage of knowledge through books, have an obligation to spread that knowledge, by copying and distributing those books far and wide. I haven't used up Finnian's book by copying it. He still has the original and that original is none the worse for my having copied it. Nor has it decreased in value because I made a transcript of it. The knowledge in books should be available to anybody who wants to read them and has the skills or is worthy to do so; and it is wrong to hide such knowledge away or to attempt to extinguish the divine things that books contain. It is wrong to attempt to prevent me or anyone else from copying it or reading it or making multiple copies to disperse throughout the land. In conclusion I submit that it was permissible for me to copy the book because, although I benefited from the hard work involved in the transcription, I gained no worldly profit from the process, I acted for the good of society in general and neither Finnian nor his book were harmed."

From a discussion of the etymology of the word "druid" on the Indo-European Linguistics Facebook group. It's the truth, by my balls! #Linguistics #Etymology
"Our Modern English word "true" comes from the same roots as "dru" (literally and figuratively) and has a fascinating story. The Old Anglo Saxon word "treow" meant both "tree" and "true" because pre-Christian pagans, believing an oak tree to be sacred, would literally touch an oak to swear an oath (in the same way a Roman would grab his right testicle to "testify," with the risk of losing it if caught in a lie). This act of touching a "treow" (or "touching wood") to swear an oath was expressed as a verb, as in "I treow it/I swear it." The "tree" part of the meaning was later lost, but not the literal words "tree/true.""

A black cat, greying on his haunches, sleepily sat on the bottom shelf of a wooden display trolley in the entrance of the supermarket Asda. He's taking advantage of a gap among the green metal buckets full of sunflower planting kits. His front paws are together and his tail in curled under him. He isn't home as much as his owners - my neighbours - would like, because he likes roaming, snacks, and attention too much.A ginger and white cat from above, curled up asleep in a rough circle, half on on a white duvet and half on a grey blanket.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on socio-economic and sustainability

Pumping elephant

The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the lives of people around the world in millions of ways. Due to this severe epidemic, all countries in the world have been affected by all aspects, mainly economic. It is widely discussed that the COVID-19 outbreak has affected the world economy. When considering this dimension, this study aims to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world economy, socio-economics, and sustainability. In addition, the research focuses on multiple aspects of social well-being during the pandemic, such as employment, poverty, the status of women, food security, and global trade. To this end, the study used time series and cross-sectional analysis of the data. The second-hand data used in this study comes from the websites of major international organizations. From the analysis of secondary data, ...Viktor T. Toth:
After noticing that all the authors have Chinese names, and with the help of one of our AI friends, I think I was able to make sense of what happened. The authors mistranslated "Abstract" as "抽象" (chōuxiàng) in Chinese, which does mean "abstract" but in the sense of "abstract concept" rather than "summary of a paper". They then literally translated 抽 (chōu), which can mean "to pump" and 象 (xiàng), which can mean "elephant". I think the shame is not so much the authors' but the apparent complete lack of copy-editing and editorial supervision at the journal. Even so, I'll be sorely tempted to use "Pumping elephant" in my future publications...
