As we embark on the third week of SEC action, here's the snapshot of the conference in the NET rankings, along with last week's risers and fallers. Risers - Georgia: +10 - #Mizzou: +10 - Ole Miss: +6 Fallers - Vandy: -10 - Arkansas: -9 - LSU: -6

Matt Harris @mattjharris.bsky.social · 09/01/2025
I'm not making a forecast either way. Just noting that 0-3 starts tend to foreshadow a poor SEC campaign. Could Texas recover? Sure. But they've played poorly against top-100 teams going back to the opener. The entire SEC is in that range. Its WAB in these games is 152nd. That's not good.

Matt Harris @mattjharris.bsky.social · 09/01/2025
The issue with Texas is when you isolate their games against quality competition. Per Torvik, it's playing like the No. 98 team in the nation. That's closer to LSU and South Carolina than a bubble team. And it's 0-4 Q1 games. Do they have time? Yeah. But their form is worrying.

Matt Harris @mattjharris.bsky.social · 09/01/2025
For sure. And this is why the unbalanced schedules matter, too. Sometimes, you get reprieves in your third home-and-home. Or you get contenders visiting your place. The real fun begins when you start 0-4.

This weekend's win probabilities for teams at 0-2, per KenPom. - South Carolina vs. Auburn: 9% - LSU at Ole Miss: 19% - Arkansas vs. Florida: 29% - Texas vs. Tennessee: 35% - Oklahoma at Georgia: 37% Twilight will be fast approaching for several squads after Saturday.

Matt Harris @mattjharris.bsky.social · 09/01/2025
Texas' next three games: Tennessee, at Oklahoma, and at Florida. Even if they salvage a 1-4 start, similar teams tended to top out 5-13 or 6-12. Arkansas has Florida...then LSU, Mizzou and UGA. The median outcome for teams at 2-3 is 9-9 or 10-8. I'd be worried in Austin.

Matt Harris @mattjharris.bsky.social · 09/01/2025
After last night, five SEC squads sit at 0-2 in the standings. While all isn't lost yet, I'd encourage them to get in the wind column this weekend. Since the conference expanded, life has been (mostly) rough for teams that drop their first three league outings.

1. Nuke every Q4 opponent by more than the projected margin. 2. Meet expectations against Cal and maintain a 20-plus point win over KU.

Matt Harris @mattjharris.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
Also updated sheets looking at how the SEC has fared in NET. Here's the snapshot. #Mizzou handled its business in Q4 games and beat KU, but the sugar high wore off while other SEC squads bolstered their team sheets. A lot of eggs are in the "do well in league play" basket.

Matt Harris @mattjharris.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
Put another way: Mizzou's performance is in line with predictive forecasts, but some of its peers -- Vandy and UGA, for example -- have over-performed and pushed past the Tigers. But per Torvik's model, MU's played like a top-15 squad against quality competition. There's your kernel of good news.
021 0
Matt Harris @mattjharris.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
And if you look at KenPom's "Luck" metric, which calculates how results vary from his model, MU sits at No. 137. That's close to the fat middle for Division I. Basically, the only surprise in non-con was upsetting KU. Otherwise, the Tigers pretty much performed as expected.
