That's devastating - I have been using Glitch (1) for a long time, even recently. 47 is too young for such a generous and creative soul. A little silver lining that his legacy lives on. I'll be thinking of him today. Thank you.

Probably shouldn’t have mentioned Bear as a modern example of interesting/original music writing, as it is apparent it is not the slam-dunk example I hoped for ;-) And it has become a bit of a distraction from the original post - which is the more interesting broader conversation anyway?

Young is an interesting example too. Love his work (Hider in the House, Haunted Summer). Was a big Goldsmith fan. Early works are copies of scores like Patton. Story goes it was an honest Goldsmith appreciation / hommage and indeed requested by the documentary makers. He did develop his own voice.

No, I actually try not to do sarcasm as it usually confuses people without body language :-) I genuinely think his original themes are incredibly well written and orchestrated and recognisable. I also wasn’t aware of your example or if it was the show instructing him or if it was done on purpose.

Are you calling him a Prokovthief? Silliness aside - yes, utterly distinctive. You’d never mistake Lord of The Rings for anything else. I wonder if, to a modern audience, that golden blockbuster age (which I like) sounds as ancient as Korngold did in the 80’s. Bear McCreary always sounds unique.

Started working on travelogue’s from recordings made in various cities. First single is out on Bandcamp. Berlin spent a century as the epicentre of global geopolitical trauma, the simple sounds of a street being renewed carry a quiet sense of accomplishment, even beauty. #fieldrrcording #ambient

Agreed and I’ll trust the poster to have thought about still images versus moving. Same principle in our discipline - we call overlapping frequencies (especially bass) “masking“ when it drenches audio in confusing clutter. Now that we have unlimited resources, direction/mix is even more important.

It's great to be among the wonderful folks at @frontierdev.bsky.social and making games together. Planet Zoo 2's animals have taken a generational leap forwards (just look at the visuals!) and so too has the #gameaudio authoring pipeline. It's really cool tech, and we'll share more soon!

Thanks Joe! Similarity with #gameaudio might be that creative process is a series of choices. Just fewer deadlines in #ambient. I also found it fascinating to hear you work on #elitedangerous. You always knew exactly what the game needed, and invited exploration/improvisation into your process.

I am biased because the happiness with which my child invites me to come play with him and with his toys - if someone uses “toys” as a dismissive, then they are the problem. I would doubt they were ever a happy child. Which is actually quite sad.

The mysticism around the sound of a record goes beyond the quality of the reproduction. They are inferior on any technical measurement and yet, for many they emotionally connect in a way CD’s don‘t. The tactility might be a factor indeed. I irrationally prefer CD over lossless streaming.

The amount of times I have clicked on a link and it simply doesn’t work, or brings me to a website with multiple videos too pick the right one. Owning the craft is only the first step, next also own being a sender and making sure the receiver understands the message (craft).

www.ambientvisions.com/05162026.htm If you’ve followed Jeff Pearce’s work over the years, this release feels like another beautifully realized chapter in a long and thoughtful career. For listeners discovering his music for the first time, Skyward may be one of the strongest introductions possible.

This is purely anecdotal but MTV weaponised zoom and tilt in the mid 90's. Watching anyone being interviewed, the picture resembled the perspective of a drunken sailor on heavy seas. People adopted that "look" and reflected it back to camera in behaviour. Lots of weird movement in the 90's ;-)

When sound design leans into tonality, the soundscape briefly refracts into composition. It is the space where I feel most at home. The change in perspective comes from directing sound design toward either more abstract or more concrete soundscapes. matthewflorianz.bandcamp.com/track/bliste...

“Funicular Prism” covers a turbulent period, reflected in raw processing and experimental #sounddesign. After my primal creative reaction had settled; The mirror of that moment has shaped into an impression of it. matthewflorianz.bandcamp.com/album/funicu... #ambient #music #soundscapes #spatial
On the 14th of May, my 19th Studio Album "Funicular Prism" will be released.

“Funicular Prism” began three years ago during a turbulent period and the early recordings reflected that, full of raw processing and experimental sound design. With time my initial primal creative reaction settled and I revisited the material introducing more warmth, tone, and shape. What started as a mirror of a moment has been shaped into an impression of it. A quality that frequent collaborator Mindspawn described as having a character that hints at years working in game audio: focused, spatial, and emotionally direct.

I have recorded this release on the ASM Hydrasynth, Korg Prologue, Korg X5D, Arturia Minibrute 2S and Behringer RD-9. The audio from these synthesisers has been processed in my studio to explore a long-standing fascination with the space between music and sound design, a place where textures become narratives and melodies slowly emerge.

As Ambientblog noted about earlier work, the soundscapes evoke “... wide sonic — yet unearthly — landscapes ...” that invite the listener into a dreamlike state of exploration. “Funicular Prism” continues in this direction, with immersive environments, subtle melodic movement, and a blend of music and sound design.

The music is mastered at 96khz/24bit* (*requires download) and translates beautifully on both headphones and speakers. While not a binaural release, it feels spacious, intimate, and encompassing in both formats. I encourage listening at a generous volume.

I hope the listening journey on this album ultimately feels rewarding, perhaps even offering a more optimistic observation than the one that inspired it.
