TIL: a cliché has a forgotten feminist subtext! Boomers saw Snidely Whiplash tie a woman to tracks for Dudley Do-Right to rescue. But in the 1867 ur-text, a woman chops through a locked door and saves a one-armed man from the rails. Punchline: “And these are the women who ain’t to have a vote!”

“Mr. Hearn faces the unique possibility that the government will revive this case — one that it has already announced to be meritless — based on political pressure brought by the President of the United States upon his subordinate officers.” static01.nyt.com/newsgraphics...
“While the government wishes to hold open the possibility of the development of evidence that would support a future prosecution, its own representations make plain that such a possibility is theoretical at best, and more likely, is simply fanciful. At the same time, the President of the United States has criticized the decision of the Office of the United States Attorney to drop the case in the most vituperative terms; demanded that the government reinstitute the prosecution, in part because of Mr. Hearn's political activity and the identity of one of his attorneys; and publicly entertained the possibility of firing the United States Attorney as a result of the dismissal. While all defendants deal with some degree of uncertainty regarding the odds of re-prosecution after a case has been dismissed, Mr. Hearn faces the unique possibility that the government will revive this case — one that it has already announced to be meritless — based on political pressure brought by the President of the United States upon his subordinate officers.”

I'm Canadian. Air Canada "customer service" is a running joke here - "We're not happy until you're not happy".
That said, it's not just Air Canada - I'm FED UP with "We're experiencing higher than normal call volumes" EVERY SINGLE TIME I CALL *ANY* CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER. No you're not - it's impossible for EVERY company to be having "higher than normal" anything ALL THE TIME.

We call our planet Earth. We should call it Ocean.
Ocean-centered world map in a three-lobed, interrupted Goode homolosine projection. The interruptions divide the continents rather than the oceans, leaving the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans largely continuous and visually dominant. Pale and slate blue tones, black coastlines, and a latitude–longitude grid emphasize that water covers most—about 71 percent—of Earth’s surface.

Banned Books Week is coming soon.

Book banning continues to be near the record level set in 2023. My local public library is specifically encouraging people to read banned books this month. Yours also should be doing that. Nearly 40% of challenged titles represent the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ people and people of color.

For more information, see:

https://coralvillepubliclibrary.org/banned-books-reading-challenge/

https://www.ala.org/bbooks/book-ban-data

Image is a screenshot of the Coralville Public Library website showing details for Banned Books Week, scheduled for October 4–10, 2026.
The page features a large blue banner that reads "Banned Books Week Oct 4–10, 2026" with a smaller tagline "Let Books Be" below it. The main text introduces the Banned Books Reading Challenge and explains that the American Library Association (ALA) launched the initiative in 1982 to highlight the dangers of censorship and advocate for intellectual freedom.
Under a subheading titled "Censorship by the Numbers," the text notes that in 2025, the ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom tracked a record number of challenges—4,235 unique titles. It provides additional statistics stating that 39 percent represented LGBTQIA+ people and people of color, nearly 92 percent were initiated by pressure groups and government decision makers, and about 66 percent resulted in books actually being banned from libraries.

A comment I submitted, as viewed on the NY Times website. Article link: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/30/w...
Below is a comment I just submitted on a New York Times article:
I am a retired biotechnology researcher. I have no experience evaluating autopsy reports, but I know a good deal about viruses and the immune system because for about 20 years my primary task at work was studying how pathogens evolve resistance to drugs.
For one child to be killed in this manner by one of the commonly used vaccines is very rare, comparable to the odds of winning a huge jackpot in a State Lottery. For two children to be killed in this manner by one of the standard vaccines on the same day is such a low probability that it fits the ordinary meaning of the word "impossible."

Complete Text Transcript of the Image
• Marco Rubio (@marcorubio): "#COVID19 is NOT part of a conspiracy to hurt the President. It is a real threat that will disrupt our economy & our daily lives. But at a time when we need people to believe truth the media is undermining its credibility with many by covering this as a partisan political issue."
• Matthew (@MatthewDavidH): "That's because starting in 2009 the GOP has MADE infectious diseases into a partisan issue. Attacks on Obama's response to the 2009 flu virus caused disproportionate number of Republican citizens to die of flu ever since, because since then vaccine uptake has been lower in GOP."
