There is an oddly satisfying ending in which Murakami brings the story to a head, but the conclusion makes no attempt to tie together all the threads that have been carelessly woven across the narrative. Yet somehow the frustrating plot is great fun. We learn what we need to learn to enjoy the story

An early Murakami work, this contains all the elements we associate with his best-loved works, but compressed into 300 pages. Every solution to a surreal and enigmatic problem only raises fresh questions and mysteries.

This sprawling book may test the reader’s patience. It requires attention, and understanding of Freudian psychology and Marxism. Nonetheless it is an audacious and humorous merging of ideas, and a great esoteric work.

One story discusses Freud’s relations with his followers; another offers a satirical portrait of Trotsky; the final story concerns a future planetary evacuation.

This is three stories with a twist – they do not run consecutively but blend into one narrative; each story advances a little before switching to the next one. This non-linear approach allows the reader to spot parallels.

Agamemnon’s death is inevitable due to the gods and Fate, but also because of past sins, those of his father and himself. His fate is part of a cycle of revenge that began before his death, and will continue beyond it.

The first part of Aeschylus’s Oresteia deals with the murder of King Agamemnon by his wife Clytemnestra and her lover. The presence of the unheeded prophetess Cassandra adds to the sense of impending doom.

The real pillars of society, Ibsen argues, are not cynical politicians and businessmen, but the spirit of truth and the spirit of freedom.

The play contains many familiar Ibsen themes – the hollowness of a great reputation, the stifling nature of parochial society, the marriage based on a lie, and the need for ethics in public life.

Brother Jacob is a humorous fable about avarice and commercialism. Jacob is a wise idiot. He lacks sense, but he exposes the foolishness of others. We may wonder who the real idiot is– the harmless Jacob, the shallow and greedy David, or the gullible townsfolk who are so easily manipulated.

Two lesser-known stories. The Lifted Veil is told by a man who has enough preternatural skills to predict his death and enough psychic insight into other minds to see their mean, puerile thoughts. The story is intense and shocking by Eliot’s standards, a leap into territory unexplored by her novels.

Dickens favours emotional expression over the consumption of mere facts, kindness over profit, and individuality over reducing humanity to the status of mere machines.

Mistry piles the gloom on high, but in doing so he makes the point that in a callous and authoritarian state, almost anything terrible can happen to its most vulnerable members. Some warmth is found in the frail alliance of his four likeable protagonists.

Mistry’s critique of Indira Gandhi’s India has the panoramic sweep and compassion for the poor and needy that we have not seen in English Literature since Dickens. He combines this with the studied detail, overwrought drama and focus on social iniquities that we might find in a Zola novel.

The book’s message is added loosely, because Vonnegut is not interested in didacticism. It is more of an anti-book. There is immense pleasure to be had from Vonnegut’s obtuse rejection of standard literary tropes and conventional social and moral attitudes.

matthewbeck.bsky.social @matthewbeck.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The only way to enjoy Vonnegut is to not take anything seriously. The characters are pawns, because Vonnegut thinks that humans are machines with limited free will. The story is a series of absurd incidents which Vonnegut includes because he finds them funny.

Dawkins helped establish the ‘new atheism’ which was merely what atheists had always thought but politely refrained from saying.
