Happy to announce the publication of our @natcomms.nature.com article on the evolution of Darwin's finches! A big thanks to @artkokay.bsky.social who made gorgeous illustrations! You can find the full article here: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

A supergene and genomic mosaicism are associated with phenotypic evolution in Galápagos tree finches - Nature Communications
Adaptive radiations produce striking phenotypic diversity over remarkably short evolutionary timescales. This study uses genomic analyses of Darwin’s tree finches to reveal a cryptic lineage, in which...

Hybridization and introgression are major evolutionary processes. Since the 1940s, the prevailing view has been that they shape plants far more than animals. In our new study (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... ), we find the opposite: animals exchange genes more, and for longer, than plants

For #NationalHummingbirdDay, 47-million-year-old Parargornis from Germany was a proto-hummingbird with short wing feathers like a modern hummingbird but a short, broad skull like their cousins, the swifts. Perhaps hummingbird ancestors started hovering before they drank nectar. 🪶🧪 (📷Mayr)

A common type of ant in Europe breaks a fundamental rule in biology: its queens can produce male offspring that are a whole different species go.nature.com/4mOb5T9

‘Almost unimaginable’: these ants are different species but share a mother
Ant queens of one species clone ants of another to create hybrid workers that do their bidding.

Day 2 of Popgen is also where I say “Please look at your kinship matrix.”Probably the best summary of pop structure there is, identifies problems or weird stuff in the data, and avoids pitfalls of structure-like plots and PCA.
