after a night of good sleep I think I see what they did with the plot: re-arranging the story around a certain fact and keeping it hidden for most of the movie...in the other versions it was in the opening scenes... It may slightly change my opinion on the film...

just to elaborate: by choosing to emphasize a certain angle of the story (I'll keep it vague to avoid spoilers) Shimizu weakened the potential of the plot and all its ambiguity, something that makes Yokomizo's novels compelling, and that makes the 1977's film interesting in all its campiness

well...a couple of inspired scenes, but overall disappointing... I'm all in for freely adapting the original material...but Shimizu went too far in my opinion...

matteoB @matteob.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
I approached it thinking "we don't need a live-action" so I was pleasantly surprised...as I said especially on a formal level...the scene under the rain felt a bit cringey I have to admit...

matteoB @matteob.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
probably the anime does a better work adapting the manga and giving it its own spin (the joyful run under the rain in the anime is unmatched), but I have a soft spot for "Kore'eda does landscapes" (Maborosi, Our Little Sister)
