Feels like we hit the old house renovation jackpot today: asked the joiner to gently prise open the panels either side of the dining room window, discovered a complete pair of original shutters, plus many decades of dirt accumulated since they were painted shut #heritage #renovation

Tube strike afternoon walk from Waterloo to Kings Cross brings me past the radical reformer John Cartwright, still sitting in his garden waiting for annual parliaments
A life size bronze statue of a seated man in 19th Century clothes. The statue is on a large stone plinth, taller than the statue itself, with a lengthy inscription on a metal panel attached to the front. Inscription reads: "JOHN CARTWRIGHT, BORN 28. SEP 1740: DIED 23. SEP 1824.
The Firm, Consistent, Persevering Advocate OF UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE, Equal Representation, Vote by Ballot. AND ANNUAL PARLIAMENTS.

An Experiment on a Bird in an Air Pump by Joseph Wright of Derby. Tag yourself
An Experiment on a Bird in an Air Pump by Joseph Wright of Derby, 1768
From Wikipedia: The painting depicts a natural philosopher, a forerunner of the modern scientist, recreating one of Robert Boyle's air pump experiments, in which a bird is deprived of air, before a group of onlookers. The group members exhibit a variety of reactions, such as grief, disbelief and dismay, but for most of the audience scientific curiosity overcomes concern for the bird. The central figure looks out of the picture as if inviting the viewer's participation in the outcome.

'The case of the missing charter: the bookseller, the bookcase and the lampshade?' - West Yorkshire Archive Service #leeds #history #archives wyascatablogue.wordpress.com/the-le…
Mr C E Cheshire, owner of the bookshop in Canterbury, initially had no idea what he had in his possession. In a letter to the Town Clerk on the 21st June 1952 he reported that “it was bought by us about six years ago and then disappeared. It had fallen behind a bookcase and has only just come to light”.

Mr Cheshire had originally purchased it as part of a composite lot bought at a village sale in east Kent. When he first saw the three large vellum sheets that had slipped behind the bookcase he thought he could use them to make nice lampshades! Thankfully, after seeing the Latin text and wondering about its importance, he beckoned over his Archivist friend Mr Urry to take a closer look and Mr Urry quickly alerted his friend, Miss Foster.

#Renovation milestone: Test areas of gloss paint removal from stone window sills, and repointing in lime mortar which will replace a hotchpotch of cement-based repairs. Old house needs to breathe!
