The 2026 #10StartUpsToWatch is out in @cenmag.bsky.social today. This year I profiled Alta Resource Technologies, a company refining rare earth elements. C&EN has covered lanmodulin before, but it was neat to see this technology coming to market. #chemsky🧪 cen.acs.org/biological-c...

EU regulators are phasing out smoke flavorings because of health concerns. But flavorists are finding ways to recreate the complex flavor of smoke with other ingredients. Try making your own smoke flavor by playing the game Shea Murphy created for this story. cen.acs.org/food/food-in...

Biden revived industrial policy for cleantech. Trump hasn't shown much interest in fighting climate change, but he has embraced industrial policy. In some cases, Trump's energy and security goals overlap with Biden's climate goals, creating a fascinating mix of policy. cen.acs.org/policy/trump...

Trump dismantled Biden’s industrial policy for cleantech. Will the replacement succeed?
His administration isn’t interested in slowing climate change, but it’s using industrial policy to achieve national security goals that overlap with Biden-era priorities

Last year, FDA started issuing emergency use authorizations for drugs to treat New World screwworm, the first ever for animal health products. Evidence from South America shows the drugs should help farmers cope. But the real solution is to push screwworms out of the US cen.acs.org/food/agricul...

An interesting update on this story. Solvay says it's planning to source rare earth feedstock for its separation plant in France from Viridis' planned ionic adsorption clay mine in Brazil. www.solvay.com/en/press-rel...

Mining heavy rare earths is unlike any other type of mining I've come across. Typically, miners pour chemicals into the ground and let them seep through the soil. It's caused immense environmental damage in Asia, but now miners in Brazil say they have a better method. cen.acs.org/environment/...
