LOL he’s doing the meme
New right wing thing is describing crimes as generically as possible to pretend like they're not crimes. Someone gets convicted of conspiracy and they start yelling "Wow so it's illegal to make plans with friends now"

Hard to look at this trend line and not presume City continued to use sham finances consistently since 2018

City began their "disguised funding scheme" to avoid posting the largest losses in PL history, just in time to rebound and win their first league title with this ownership group two years later.
iii) The Club’s financial position: H2 2009 and H1 2010
64) While the Club’s commercial revenue increased during 2009, by Q3/Q4 2009 the
contemporaneous documents show that the Club
a) Had not been able to generate the levels of commercial revenue for which it had
budgeted. ‘Doing deals’ (both generally4 and with AD Sponsors in particular) had
proved more challenging than the Club had anticipated
b) Was anticipating that it would suffer very significant losses in the 2009/10 financial
year and in future financial years
c) Recognised that the only way to fund its planned levels of expenditure in the coming
months and years would be by ADUG continuing to provide very significant sums by
way of equity contribution. 65) The Club’s financial position caused two principal reasons for concern at that time in the
months and years that followed:
a) As regards the short term there was real concern that the Club’s total losses in the
2009/10 season would exceed what was at that time the record single season financial
loss by a PL member club (Chelsea FC in 2006) of £140million. That was a record that
the Club was adamant it should not break
b) As regards the longer term
i) was of the view that the Club would likely continue to suffer large losses
for at least the following five seasons
ii) There was concern as to whether – and if so how – the Club might be able to comply
with the UEFA FFP Rules5 that were under consideration at that time and that (it
was believed) would likely be introduced (as well as any domestic FFP Rules that
might in time be introduced into English football).
66) Receipt of ever-increasing amounts of owner funding from ADUG would not enable the
Club to meet those concerns6

Another blow for Luke Edwards, as Newcastle’s CEO describes Arsenal’s work on the Bruno transfer as that of “professionals”
- Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson:
"The value of the deal was not the amount that Arsenal had hoped to pay, and of course we wanted to get a larger amount"
"But when both parties are professionals in negotiation, this is the natural shape of negotiations"
"The fees we received are satisfactory for us. And if you want to look at it from a marketing angle, it is the highest transfer value for a player in this position and at this age"
"Was it a good deal for Newcastle? I think so. And in return, Arsenal got an exceptional player and personality, so I see the deal as financially successful f both parties"

I’ve been going to protests for most of my life and…Yeah, this captures it.

All protests are different in their own way but at the heart of them they are all usually pretty simple:
It doesn't have to be this way.
I refuse to let it be this way.
We refuse to let it be this way.

Interesting briefings in US political press on Trump’s involvement w/Balogun suspension: - USSoccer had already launched appeal before Trump involvement - Lutnick leading from admin - Trump call with Johnny Baby was informational more than directed as evidenced by Trump not taking credit more
• Zoom in: Trump called Infantino to understand why a red card was given to Balogun and why the one-game suspension was imposed, according to a source familiar with the call.
• Infantino explained the rules, noted the U.S. had already filed a challenge, and said an independent FIFA body was reviewing the matter. "There's nothing I can do," Infantino said, per the source.
• "He wanted to understand what the red card meant and what the process is," a source familiar with the call said, adding that Trump "just knew the guy was 'suspended'" and isn't "a soccer guy."• Behind the scenes: The effort to challenge the red card started before Trump's call.
• Commerce Secretary Howard
Lutnick, who led the U.S. delegation to the Bosnia game, read through FIFA's rules on the flight home and began mapping out how the U.S. might contest the call.
• Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House Task Force on the World Cup, then took up the effort, pulling in Trump-aligned lawyers and supporters to pressure FIFA.
A Trump adviser downplayed the idea that the president shaped the outcome, noting he hadn't asked Infantino for specific action: "If Trump had put his thumb on the scale and achieved this result, he would have a field day bragging about it."

@lmsacasas.bsky.social is describing something really fundamental here that has been missing from a lot of the AI criticism I’ve seen of late.
But this seems misguided. We’ve made machines that can fly faster and farther than the swallow-tailed kite, but in no way does it follow that the kite should cease from its flight or that it is somehow diminished because of the advent of flying machines. That there is something else in the world that flies tells us nothing about whether the kite ought to fly. Of course it should fly because the point of flying for the kite is not to somehow demonstrate its uniqueness. It is blessedly free from such forms of existential angst, the experience of which might be the thing that does distinguish us as a species!

It seems to me that we would be better off if we were less preoccupied with the question of human uniqueness, if we took for granted that we are creatures of certain sort making their way in the world with a distinct set of capabilities and potentialities and that we ought to exercise these capabilities and develop these potentialities not because they make us special but because they make us happy.³

I will set aside for a moment the question of whether machines, LLMs specifically, can think or reason or use language in a manner that corresponds to the human use of language, etc. But let us grant for arguments sake that they can. They can certainly generated passable simulations of such things. But why should this mean that I ought not to think for myself and with others? Why should I cease from inhabiting the playground of language because a machine can pretend to play in it as well? Why should I abandon the exercise of judgment or the pursuit of knowledge? We must pursue these things not because the dignity of our humanity is on the line, but because our joy is.

The machine cannot make us yield our ground. It is true that other humans can turn the machine against us, but that is a different problem. Here, I simply want to encourage us not to abandon those activities that bring us purpose, meaning, and delight, which are often the very activities that also bri…

McGrann gets into the philosophical connections of the AI boom and does an excellent job undressing our Silicon Valley overlords
A Philosophy 101 student who misreads Nietzsche writes a bad paper and gets a C. A billionaire who misreads Nietzsche builds a political philosophy around the misreading and funds it with the GDP of a small nation. This is fucking insane.

These are not serious people. They are serious about accumulation and about winning. They are not serious about the questions that matter for what they’re building: what we owe each other, what makes a life worth living, and what happens to a civilization when you remove the material basis of human agency. These questions have occupied the best minds in human history for millennia. The Valley’s engagement with them amounts to reading the CliffsNotes on a transatlantic flight and arriving convinced you’ve mastered the canon.

And they want to restructure civilization.
