The more I think about this the more actively angry I am about it. I am sick of art that makes sex a topic having to navigate through a dozen different layers of Puritanism just to exist. Visa/Mastercard, the console platforms, YouTube, censorship boards. It all makes it such a commercial risk.

Winners of a recent Dancesport championship in Rome. I think that one of the biggest challenges my sport has in gaining respect is that it looks much easier than it is to do. Most other sports show the work, but no matter how hard you think this routine is, I promise you, it's harder than you think.

(Note: There is some excellent character writing out there, and some of literature/film/games' greatest artists are known for their characters. But the point here is *I* don't like character writing, and I don't like how people are increasingly unable to do anything but consume characters)

See? The point here is that characters are annoying. They frequently get in the way of the narrative; they become the fixation of the audience; and because every author now needs to focus on characters, said characters are explicitly dumbing down storytelling. I hate writing characters.

Or here's another great example: Dazai. Dazai's best two novels are: 1) vaguely autobiographical but really more about his observations on the self and its relation to the world, and 2) a story about a schoolgirl and I challenge anyone to remember her name (you can't because she has no name)

So in conclusion, the obsession with characters are a YA/Marvel/DC intellectual dumbing-down forced on all writers. I wish I were around back when Camus and Sartre were writing their books. No one even remembers who their characters were, despite the books being Nobel Prize-winning works.

So consequently, you have to spend hour upon hour and re-read after re-read, making sure that your characters aren't going to make you Internet Personality Of The Day, and all that time and energy would have been better off going into the narrative and further tightening its themes.

No one cares if you write a brutal takedown of society. Mostly because most of your audience won't even realise that you've done that. But they will sure as hell let you know if your character says or does one thing they don't like. Because that's the limit of their critical reading skills.

I hate writing characters, lol. Characters should be a mechanism that allows the audience to arrive at your narrative's point. Instead, they've become the focus because cultural literacy is so low, and now you need to spend SO MUCH TIME working on them.
