The rise of a ‘professional’ managerial class in UK universities paralleled their decline as successful institutions delivering great teaching and world class research. The first symptom was the emasculation of staff run senates and committees. Followed by astonishing inflation of salaries.

What a binfire UKHE is. So glad to be out of it. And let's remember that, at the end of the day, this is at the door of British academics. University management isn't generally made up of outside management people bused in from 'industry'.

Not difficult to miss when you know. I’m a fan of Turin and the tower is not the least of its attractions, including colonnades, chocolate and trams. 🚃

Brexit Bin 🇪🇺 🇬🇧 🇩🇪 @brexitbin.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Always remember ... Brexit was the first salvo in a Putin-backed attack upon the West. The same battle is now being fought throughout Europe. If the UK finally bins Brexit and rejoins the EU, it will be seen as a victory for the whole of Europe — and a decisive strike against Putin-backed populism.

I left Twitter (latterly and sadly ‘X’) almost 3 three years ago, so I’ve no way assessing that estimate. If it’s anywhere near the truth then it’s worrying, of course.

I’ve never heard *anyone* mention replacement theory in the UK. As to questions like: ‘Would you be unhappy if your local church was closed and replaced by a mosque’ - Aw, come off it. (I have only skimmed the listed report, but I’m not impressed by its approach. Nothing personal.)

I’ll never forget, many years ago, when the regular seminar was locked out of KCL, he led its members to the ‘Marquess of Anglesey’ (the pub where we usually gathered after the lecture) and gave a brilliant, unscripted talk on the Franciscans (appropriately) in the street outside.

Government inaction over profiteering in children’s social care is costing billions and harming the most vulnerable. My latest Substack: martinbarrow.substack.com/p/the-westmi...
martinbarrow.substack.com
The Westminster Government has fallen short on its promise to end profiteering in children’s social care. Now the cost of looking after children in care is rising by £1 billion a year.
It is two years since the Labour Government set out plans to curb the profits of private providers of children’s homes and foster care in England.

For 14yrs, the Tories cratered our economy, added thousands to our cost of living, melted down public services and brexited us into decades of eye-watering expense and lost opportunity. That’s still their plan. With tax breaks for the super rich paid for by welfare cuts. So what TF is this headline?

Combine that with two simple but bold reforms and we could halve our energy bills, driving them down to an economic minimum and keeping them there. We can make our energy market work for Britain - again.
