The Emperor’s New Clothes: Why Compulsory CBTs and Phishing Tests Keep Failing
What looks like assurance is often theatre. And that costs more than time — it also increases risk.

Lessons from the Titanic: when you don’t respond to a crisis — Matt Palmer
When the RMS Titanic hit an iceberg on 15 April 1912, she set off flares and her wireless operator sent out a distress call. The RMS Carpathia responded, but by the time she arrived, the Titanic had a...

Breaking Down Cybersecurity: The Real Meaning Behind the Jargon — Matt Palmer
What really is cyber security and why doesn't the traditional CIA triad of confidentiality, integrity, and availability work? And what's that got to do with footballs anyway? I've written this simple breakdown of the five key cyber security terms - confidentiality, integrity, availability, authe

Is hacktivism an acceptable choice? — Matt Palmer
This week I attended CSO Online 's CSO Security Summit in London, which was tracked into protection and culture tracks. One of the most interesting aspects of this was the focus on mental heath. As any incident responder (professional or accidental!) will know, these can be very stressful. We ignor

Thank you also to CSOonline for the award yesterday evening. It's much appreciated and a pleasure to be in such good company with so many capable and passionate people. #Cybersecurity is still an incredible field where no two roles, or people, are the same.

if we want to ensure everyone with an interest has a productive outlet for their talents, and understands the risks and personal impacts of taking the wrong path, we need to do more. Getting involved in the wrong things is too easily done.

through established paths. It's also an are of interest that is very hard for parents to support, monitor and guide on. Jersey Cyber Security Centre supports several work experience students each year, all of whom have made a substantial contribution to our work. But it is the tip of the iceberg.

We still have very low female participation in STEM subjects. many schools do not even offer Computing at 14-18 (GCSE and A level in UK and Jersey). We don't fully understand how to support cognitive diversity, which can lead to talented young people feeling isolated and challenged to engage.

We still need to improve our capability to give young people with an interest in cyber the right opportunities to progress that interest in appropriate way, limited readiness of the education community to support and guide those with a high technical aptitude with challenging work in school.

The takeaway for me from Lisa Forte's panel was that a lot of the discussion around responding to #hacktivism focusses on the symptoms rather than that cause. Indeed I think Sarb Sembhi was the only person to really talk about motivations when he mentioned climate activism.

Securing our digital foundations with DNS
Last month at the Channel Islands Cyber Security Conference, I announced the high level results of our first review of DNS security in Jersey public bodies and critical infrastructure (CNI) providers. This looked at whether local organisations are configuring their internet domains (like jcsc.

JCSC weren't using it, so registered an account and we are just waiting on our IT provider to edit the DNS (I don't have access - segregation of duties and all that good stuff). So for now we are @jerseycyber.bsky.social but this will change. It's not ideal but shouldn't take long.

JCSC issued written advice on friday to all public bodies and ALOs to verify, and shared @jerseyitguy.org's video how to guide to help them. There are some fake accounts impersonating gov at the moment so best to be careful until they are verified. I nearly shared the wrong one.

Locking down my x account was less a point of principle than a simple recognition that; if you become what you think, and you think what you read, you really don't want to read x. The bandwagon is rolling to bluesky, and I'm on it here: bsky.app/profile/matt.je.
