iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

Working hard on slides for my upcoming talk at C++ Under the Sea. At the "oh my golly how is this going to fit in an hour" stage, and about halfway through fleshing out the deck...

My CppCon Keynote, “The Address is Not The Place” is now up on YouTube! It’s not often that we get new tiers added to the memory hierarchy of computing, but it sure is fun! You can certainly get ahead of the curve by thinking about the programmatic challenges (and possibilities) this will cause.

Had fun speaking with @bloopmuseum today at CppCon; if you’re here, swing by their booth while they’re around!

I haven’t been yet, but they’ve apparently bought out a huge abandoned government building in Pittsburgh and are filling it with a ton of vintage computing equipment.

The Bloop Museum is awesome! Drove 8 hours to visit it with my son a few months back! Great to hear it's getting some celebrity endorsements :-)

Mitigation landed: PLEASE let me know if you are accidentally affected by the rate limits I added. I absolutely don't want to affect any real clients and I would prefer being permissive but woken up by alerts to affecting real people or use cases!

Matt Godbolt @matt.godbolt.org · 17/09/2026

(it's not a real attack it's trying all manner of random subdomains and the usual PHP like attack endpoints but still it burns our rates and wakes me up :))

I think someone took my "please try and hack us and let us know" message too far lol; tons of alerts overnight about traffic anomalies as some google cloud based bot cloud pokes at CE.

It's all original hardware and software, so no worries about it being LLM based (if that's what you mean).

c++ pals! What retro gaming stuff would you like to see at CppCon later this week?

Had a great time, sadly couldn't stay longer. Caught @adriansdigitalbasement.com and other luminaries at a panel; fantastic stuff. Sadly still didn't manage to get a selfie with Adrian: next time!!

A panel of retro YouTubers; Adrian Black and Veronica Explains among them (and many other who I've now subscribed to!)

Safe trip! Hope to catch you again (and this time get a selfie as I flustered and forgot to ask last year!)

Hahaahah. It's an endless source of confusion

Work wanted to film me talking about things that I care about ... so obviously I talked about reading assembly and why it still matters :) www.youtube.com/shorts/cZbkQ...

Do developers still need to read assembly?

Very reasonable position! I'm still just enough of a Xoogler/apologist to - against all reason - still give them the benefit of the doubt lol

Third song in "some music" playlist... Rick Astley Hahahahahahah

I'd take Gemini assistant in a heartbeat. It's bonkers that a company that has (willingly!) all my life information can't bloody well answer simple questions. Aaargggg

Matt Godbolt @matt.godbolt.org · 09/09/2026

Arg. What happened to Google home stuff? I used to come home and "hey Google, play some music please". Today I said that three times: - sure here's a playlist called sunflower - sure here's some (giant long playlist name I didn't recognise) - sure here's a playlist called "some music" Srsly...

Can someone help my pal make it up to Chicago for #vcfmw ? Thanks in advance!

I've spotted this too! I replied to the first couple, "perhaps you didn't watch the rest of the video, that's exactly what we cover" but then gave up

I like the term code poet! But helping a small team or organisation achieve their goals is rewarding too! Not quite the same, but I have hobby time programming too

000

Matt Godbolt @matt.godbolt.org · 31/08/2026

Right! Will be...interesting...to see how this shakes out, and how much we might have to try and exercise self control and "do it the old fashioned way" to keep our eye in, and have something to teach newcomers with.

010

Matt Godbolt @matt.godbolt.org · 31/08/2026

More like, as I've gotten older (wiser?) some of my best coding is not actual code writing so much as pointing folks in the right direction. Like "executive chef" type stuff. But also telling robots what to do too.

010

Matt Godbolt @matt.godbolt.org · 30/08/2026

Wondering vaguely if I'm now more an "executive programmer" these days.

Hahaha yes :) it has surprised one person I told only this week :)

Lool yes. At my new company we call it our "UNIX", but I still find myself slipping and saying LDAP

What time is it? Computerphile time! Sean does another great job of editing my word salad of excitement as I go into how your computer tells the time!

Hahah I just spotted nearly a third of those are from one video that got picked up by The Algorithm early on and it's probably my least favourite video! I mean the content is OK but it's early in my video making career and so much is wrong with the style!
