Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 9hThis news comes as I’m working on integrating fmod into Siren - hopefully licensing/pricing changes aren’t coming. #gamedev 091

Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 01/10/2026I decided early on that Siren wouldn't have a typical editor. I'm currently editing a map in LDtk and seeing the changes hot-reload in my running game instantly. I could just as easily use a different editor, like Tiled. Bring your own tools and define your own workflow. #gamedev #gameengine #rust 073
Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 12/09/2026Just made the switch to Linux. I'm happy to report that Siren built/ran with ZERO code changes necessary! 🦀🐧 #gamedev #rustlang #linux 0160
Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 11/09/2026I've had it with Win 11 and want to switch to Linux. But I haven't used Linux as my primary desktop for almost 20 years. So I'm a little behind on the current distros. I'm currently looking at Zorin, but I wouldn't mind some advice/recommendations. 🐧 #linux #programming #tech 730

Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 18/08/2026I now have a (small, crude) demo of my unannounced game running. Seeing that running on my engine, with all of the systems working together - that's the tipping point. 000
Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 17/08/2026Been heads down on Siren development a lot lately. There's still a mountain of work ahead. But I can finally see the light of a v1 release. I've often questioned myself, wondering if I can really program this thing solo. But it's finally really coming together! #gamedev #programming #rustlang 1102

I was anticipating the PS6. ... I just unsubbed from PS+. I now have no desire for the PS6. If I'm being forced into a digital-only world, I'll go to PC/Steam. 040

Please indie devs, don't fall for this. Set the right price. Don't be part of the race to the bottom. 6788888
Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 27/05/2026I know everyone wants to jump right into the fun stuff. But remember, it's a marathon. I've been programming almost daily for well over 20 years and still feel like a total noob sometimes. 😅 There's *always* more to learn in programming/gamedev. Take your time. Absorb it. Enjoy your journey. ❤️ 150
Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 27/05/2026Game coding will involve dealing with: - Graphics APIs - Physics - File management - Net code - Multithreaded systems - Intense performance constraints That's barely scratching the surface - Rendering alone is infinitely vast. Building that foundational knowledge first is vital to your success. 150
Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 27/05/2026Once you have a foundation, you can move on to things like data structures, common algorithms, and performance. You may not feel like you're working towards a game, but you are! Gaining deep knowledge will pay off in the long run. Eventually, you'll be ready to move on to game-centric topics. 110
Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 27/05/2026You may not want to hear this, but don't start with game coding! First, just learn to program. You can shift your focus to games later. Pick a language and start at the beginning. Understand the syntax. Learn what the computer is actually *doing* with your code. 230
Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 27/05/2026I see a lot of people here getting burnt out on "game coding" tutorials. They say they feel like they aren't learning anything. Look, gamedev is a very *difficult* subset of software development. Let's talk about it... (a short thread) #gamedev #indiedev #programming 3134
Matt Flowers @matt.flowers · 21/05/2026People are quick to blame Unreal for technical issues (trust me, I get it.) But given the low bar for quality in comparatively simpler software, I can’t help but see something like UE5 as an absolute miracle, despite its issues. People have no idea how complex these things are. #gamedev #unreal 080
