A passage from Bryher's Heart to Artemis, where she discusses helping intellectuals and Jews fleeing the rise of Nazism. Does this, maybe, remind you of attitudes you may have recently encountered ?
An extract from Bryher's Heart to Artemis, which reads "If I asked my fellow Englishmen for assistance they only said, “Oh, don’t be so emotional, there must be something wrong with the people or their fellow citizens wouldn’t have turned them out” and if I showed them photographs of the brutalities they answered, “Can’t you see, they must be faked.” I found that there was nothing to choose between the political parties. The Right said, “Wait and see” and the Left asked, “What about our jobs?”

Great work by a group of Axel Springer Academy students... www.digitaldigging.org/p/they-drone...
The scale of the problem
Let’s start with the numbers that German authorities didn’t want public.

According to classified BKA reports obtained by the team: 1,072 incidents involving 1,955 drones in 2025 alone (as of November 19). Forty-five percent occurred in evening hours. Drone swarms flew “almost exclusively over or near military installations.”

In only 29 of 498 investigated cases could drone pilots be identified. In none of those cases were they state actors. In 88 percent of cases, authorities couldn’t even identify the drone type.

The BKA’s own assessment: “Individual incidents indicate complex operations drawing on larger financial and logistical resources.”

Translation: this isn’t hobbyists.

To help westerners understand what Syrian detainees mean by "overcrowded", this is a cell from Airforce Security at Mazzeh Airport. The number on the piece of paper isn't the cell number, it's the number of detainees in the cell. Ask an Arabic speaker what the number_s_ are.

Today, Assange is a free man. Melzer is enjoying his sabbatical, after years of being paid hundreds of thousands. And yesterday, Mazen Hamada, who was so distraught that his testimony was ignored that he returned to Syria despite having been horrifically tortured, was found at Sednaya.

Every last word of this.
Understand this: the self-styled cosplaying leftist tankies of the internet, the ones who drape themselves in borrowed phrases and borrowed causes, who praise the Axis of Resistance with the fervor of armchair prophets, are the same who gnash their teeth now over the fall of Bashar al-Assad. They love to talk about revolution, to invoke the language of uprisings and justice, to conjure visions of struggle as if it were something they could livestream, edit, and repackage for engagement. But they will never — and I mean never — risk the skin on their backs or the weight of their own privilege for anything revolutionary.

Take Mazen Hamada, for instance. A name they never heard of. Mazen, who walked through fire, who was caged and tortured, who stared into the abyss and carried the burden of bearing witness to atrocities that cannot be paraphrased for a post. What would they do in his shadow? Nothing. Not a single act of substance, not a single fingernail lifted in real solidarity.

These activists, for all their posturing, exist in the unbothered comfort of Western life — life with air conditioning, safe streets, and free Wi-Fi. They do not move beyond their curated feeds or the algorithms that reward performative anger. They record podcasts from cluttered bedrooms, stacking jargon like toy blocks, and trade in “hot takes” as if that were the currency of revolutions. It is activism as theater: movements flattened into branding, dissent reduced to aesthetics, the fire of struggle coldly contained within the four edges of a screen.

What is a revolution to them? A game, a hashtag, a dream deferred indefinitely to someone else, somewhere else. They are fluent only in the rhetoric of resistance, and cultural nihilism, never its reality.

Abu Mohammad al-Julani / Ahmed al-Shar’a on why HTS has been so successful in the last few days. edition.cnn.com/2024/12/06/m...
"In a matter of days, you have taken major cities. What has changed ? How were you able to do this now ?"

"In recent years there has been a unification of internal opinions and the establishment of institutional structures within the liberated areas of Syria. This institutionalisation included the restructuring within the military factions. They entered unified training camps, and developed a sense of discipline. This discipline allowed them, with god's guidance, to enter in a battle in an organised manner. The progress and execution of plans have been swift, with clear communication and adherence to commands. They stop where they should stop and withdraw where they should withdraw. The revolution has transitioned from chaos and randomness to a state of order, both in civil and institutional matters, and in military operations alike"
