Cedar Waxwing, 2026 | Part of the 'Big Bird Bundle', running Sept 25 - Oct 10; all proceeds to benefit the Audubon Society tiltify.com/@katholan/th...
Photo of a round cross-stitch showing a cedar waxwing and its food, crabapples, both in different stages of life: at top, a nest of speckled eggs is flanked by branches with green shoots at their ends; on the top right is a nest of wide-mouthed chicks surrounded by pink crabapple buds; on the right is a juvenile cedar waxwing, thinner and less bright than an adult, surrounded by pink-and-white crabapple blossoms; on the lower right are green unripe crabapples; in the center an adult cedar waxwing (a multicolored bird in a gradient of orange, brown, yellow, and blue-grey) feeds on ripe crabapples; and at the bottom a bird skull lays in the snow, with fallen, withered crabapples laying around it. The cross-stitch is photographed in a crabapple tree, surrounded by fruit and leaves and a bright blue sky.

the Hidinginyourwifizine is out today! it's a free PDF of different reimaginings of my girl Hatsune Miku, and of course I had to make mine a cross-stitch one 🪡
A cross-stitched Hatsune Miku wearing a flowing gown with music notes around the hem. There's beads, there's backstitch, her hair and dress are waving in the wind, and the piece is photographed surrounded by spring blossoms.

We're in the double-digits now, baby! Since the discovery of the typo yesterday, I've heard from some folks that they plan to frog, and some plan to keep what they already have. Whichever you choose, know that the design WILL work perfectly either way. mathysphere.gay/pi_day_26.html

HEAD'S UP! Along with today's regular puzzle, I have to make a correction-- I misspelled a word in the design. The affected word appears twice; to fix it, I've remade four of the clues: clues 5, 6, 8, and 9.

by request, the hand bookmark is up on Etsy now! www.etsy.com/listing/4453... took a hot minute but it is available again at last 👍
Photo of a cross stitch bookmark with three hands on it: on the left, a skeletal hand holding a sewing needle; on the right, the same hand, but with muscles and tendons visible; and in the center, a full, skin-and-flesh hand holds a needle aloft. The bookmark is on navy fabric with a fringe on each end, and is photographed laying across two hands with fingers splayed out around it.

i am thinking about the sproutinglupine cross-stitch tick tonight
A closeup on a cross-stitch tick in the corner of some larger nature sampler. The tick is colored an earthy yellow-and-brown, and, while simple and slightly stylized in a classical cross-stitch way, is clearly referenced from the real creature.

a few favorite closeups! the last one is a composite: I had big dreams of swarms of bees visiting my water dish/camera setup, but ended up with just the one. She did walk around a bit, though, so I combined two photos of her. I still have the dish somewhere-- might be worth trying again sometime!
Photo of a hexagonal cross-stitch of fully-formed adult bee emerging from the cell where it underwent metamorphosis. It is photographed surrounded by paper hexagons. Photograph of a cross-stitch of a bee walking across cells full of honey. It is photographed in a waxed-cardboard frame stood up vertically, with honey pouring down the cardboard. The cross-stitch is protected from the honey by a thin clear 'sill', which directs the honey to either side, where it drips down. Photo of a cross-stitched trio of bees in a daisy field. It is photographed surrounded by wildflowers. Photo of a cross-stitch of a bee closeup. It is photographed surrounded by goldenrod, clover, and a roughly-made hexagonal water dish that fits around it, with an opening in the middle for the cross-stitch to show through. Two bees stand on the edge of the water dish to grab a drink.

someday!! I would like to have the space to keep bees! when I stitched this one I took it to a beekeeper friend's house and was happy to see that the bees seemed to approve of it
A cross-stitch sampler made of seven hexagons, each showing a different bee scene: in the center, a closeup of a bee. Around it, from top: a bee is 'born', emerging from the cell where it metamorphosed from a larva into a full bee; a bee drinks from a dewdrop on a leaf; a bee walks across the honeycomb in its hive; a bee tends to a larva in a cell; a bee goes on the attack, wings buzzing; and a group of bees visit a field of daisies.

midwesterner outfit idea: t-shirt reading 'I ❤️ cicadas' paired with a statement necklace made of old cicada shells
A photo of two small framed cross-stitches: both are of the same cicada in different colors. The top cicada is black with red eyes, and has rainbow wings done in thin backstitching. The bottom cicada is in more subdued pale browns. Both are photographed in the woods, with brown leaves underneath and green growth all around.

a few favorites from the ol' glamour photos. the underwater one was taken in a creek near me-- we've got some cool little sandbars all around from when the last set of glaciers came through :)
A small cross-stitch of two fish. They are stitched on a small square of blue fabric, which is photographed underwater, with part of it buried under sand, and ripples of moving water shining on it. A cross-stitch of an anglerfish with sharp teeth and a bright glowing lure. It is on blue fabric placed in a textured black paper frame, and a light is shining on the cross-stitch, centered so that the anglerfish's lure seems to be really glowing. A cross-stitch of a deep red giant squid, with its many ribbonlike arms splayed out. It is photographed in a textured black paper frame, and a coil of pink ribbon curls around it. A cross-stitch of a whalefall. The bones of a whale lie on the sandy ocean floor, and black hagfish and red crabs scavenge it. The cross-stitch is photographed in a black paper frame half-surrounded with sand and seashells.

ocean sampler 🐟
A cross-stitched ocean sampler, with sixteen squares in a grid, each showing a mini scene. Top row (ocean surface): a wave, two leaping dolphins, a manta ray, and a seagull. Second row (upper ocean): a coral reef with a longnose butterfly fish, clownfish, starfish, and nudibranch (Chromodoris annae); blue whales; a school of silver fish; and a seal in a kelp forest. Third row (deeper ocean): clams eating marine snow, translucent jellyfish, bioluminescent fish, and a hermit crab. Fourth row (ocean depths): giant squid, anglerfish, tube worms at a billowing vent, and a whalefall with various scavengers. The blue fabric it's stitched on is pale at the top, deepening to a darker blue at the bottom.

A cross-stitch ornament on plastic canvas. It is a Koch Snowflake fractal: a six-pointed shape made of triangles jutting out from triangles, with a pointy, bristling look. It is in white and blue, with gold thread and crystal bead accents, and looks rather like a stylized real-life snowflake.

It's a quick game, and a fantastic one-- apparently the dev lead is a history prof, and consulted with other historians during the making of the game, and it shows. Also it lets you live out the dream of going to a museum, touching all the objects, and then getting to poke into the back rooms.
