I haven't fact checked this, but if this is true, it's ridiculous. Every professional team (MLB, NFL, MLB, WNBA) has won 5 games in a row at some point since 1994.. except the browns. Even the Sonic, who haven't been a team for over half that span.

I did so many examples with badly drawn symbols: clouds, trees... so often it's the notation or the deviation from "the norm" that confuses them, so getting them to step back and really think about what they're doing and how the "ingredients" don't really matter is so valuable...

I was taught unit circle values without context, so I had an impossible time with them. Then I discovered? Learned about? This table, which at least helped me pass my exact value trig quizzes...

Added this little bit to the discourse-
My last bit for the day -

A different perspective on AI, from a more academic angle (written by 24 fields medal winners, which is basically Nobel prize winners in math)

https://mathandai.org/

I think this mirrors a lot of my concerns. Sure, if (when?) AI starts curing cancers or improving energy supplies, few will care how the advances came about.

Yet, as an educator, and one who values critical thinking, problem solving… I see, day in and day out, how humans are losing their ability to navigate the world (answer a question, write an email, navigate from A to B, adapt to a slight deviation of what they know…) on their own, without relying on AI to do fairly rudimentary cognitive lift. In my mind, off-loading so much of that process to AI is detrimental and a huge risk for humanity.

I know the easy counter is "calculators replaced mental math and we turned out fine” (or the like). But a calculator replaced one narrow, bounded skill (computations). What I'm describing is different in kind, not degree: the erosion isn't of a specific task, it's of general reasoning and cognition itself, the ability to sit with an unfamiliar problem and work through it without immediately outsourcing the thought process. The perseverance of trying something new, failing, and learning from that mistake (which is what this link is getting at from a math perspective).

So at the same time we're saying "trust," we're also teaching (intentionally or not) people to not think for themselves. Obviously not the same level of "rogue AI agents are going to hack into the defense system and start WW3," but in my mind, an equally dire alternative.

Friends & I are having a heated discussion regarding the claim that AI will "kill all humans" We have 1 friend in tech who is downplaying it (trust me im closer to this) & shared this piece as a more eloquently write up of his perspective I like my reply Piece: bcantrill.dtrace.org/2026/09/13/t...
I appreciated the piece, and the fear contagion point is real. But I think there's a fairly large hole in his argument worth exploring

Cantrill spends the whole post discrediting Coxon for lacking domain credentials; not an expert in this domain, so don't trust him. Then he asks us to trust his own credentials instead, "from my narrow domain of expertise: building computers." That's the exact same move, just pointed in the other direction. He's not rejecting "pick a domain and demand trust," he's doing it too.

And I don't think "trust the experts" even applies cleanly here in the first place. It works fine for questions with a checkable answer, does this bridge hold weight, does this piece of code do what intended… It falls apart for genuine forecasts about something that's never happened before, especially when real domain experts disagree with each other. If the experts don't even agree, "trust the experts" doesn't tell you anything, it just tells you to pick a side and pretend it's neutral.

At the same time, this isn’t how society work. One cannot pick and chose their domain to say “trust me/them… I/they know more than you.”

I cannot begin to tell you how many times people have come to complan about “new math” without any true understanding of what it is (anything but new), why approaches are being put front and center, or even engaging in a personal reflection (“i hate math… maybe because I was taught in a way that didn’t resonate with me”). I can explain the research all day, but I've learned that leading with "trust me, I know the pedagogy" almost never lands and honestly isn’t the move, because what's actually underneath their frustration is something real and specific to them. Their lived experience is not something I can out-argue with data, and dismissing it as "just trust the expert" would be missing the point entirely. The two claims, is the method sound, and did this person have a bad experience, aren't actually in conflict, but collapsing them in…

We're spending the term in Spain. We have a list of topics my 11 yo needs to know upon our return. For math, Open Up grade 7, units 1-5 One of which is proportional relationships. Pretty sure I know how we're going to do that one. Euros/kg.

Just saw a post on Reddit - which would make for a fun geometry exploration. Using the shape of the pieces in a Tony's Chocolonely bar, how does one break up a bar so that it's more or less evenly split between n people

While you're at it, figure out this progression from a package i got earlier this week... (commerce city has a huge USPS site- so big that it's its own zip code, 80266. I once tracked a package that went through that facility twice... so silly).

I ordered something last weekend. It took 57 hours for USPS to move the package through 3 Texas cities and arrive in Denver. It then took 59 hours for the same package leave the Denver distribution center.

Day 2 of having a drip coffee machine... 1. I was so focused on the ridiculousness that 1 cup of coffee is 4.5oz I forgot to add grounds... & made a pot of water. Well a pot that filled a 12 oz mug... aka 3 cups. The espresso machine 2. is way sexier 3. makes a way better cup

We're renting our place for the term & I didn't want to leave out my espresso machine (or stupid expensive yeti french press) but figure i should provide a method to caffeinate, so I got a second hand drip machine. It actually has cups & ounces! 1 cup = 4.5oz Which is 133ml... make it make sense

47 yrs old and I just got my first drip coffee machine. Can somebody explain "coffee machine cup math" to me? A "standard" coffee mug in our house holds 10-12oz. But this is 2+ cups according to my machine? Which means it's programmed so "one cup" is a cappuccino sized? Make it make sense

I really like it. If it were me i would add something about how the focus of the class is less on the answer and more about developing mathematical thinking and problem solving skills. And how AI short changes the later as a path to the former.

One of the more ridiculous FB Marketplace posting... somebody is listing housing numbers for sale. "This is a complete set of three numbers: 4, 2, and 4 (perfect if your street address is 424)" I really want to reply, "will these work if my address is 244?"

How to create a PIN?
Select 4 digits.
Ensure that the same digit is not repeated (e.g. 1153,

While I like the idea behind "I'm doing your job for you, so i shouldn't be paying for those services" By now we all understand how corporate America works and know they're just going to raise their prices to combat the discount, right?

I've always had mixed feelings about land acknowledgments. I appreciate what they're trying to do, but they always come across as a feel-good (for the giver) performative act without any meaningful follow-up. This feels similar. I also recognize I'm a white man. Thoughts? What am i missing?
Twitter post from the Denver Post -
"The Denver City Council is weighing the addition of a "slavery acknowledgment" at the beginning of its meetings to recognize the forced labor of enslaved Africans and the legacy of that practice.

Denver City Council weighs new 'slavery acknowledgement' that would be read at start of meetings"

I forgot the song "Old Man Trump" was a thing. Written, but never recorded, by singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie in 1954. The song describes the racist housing practices & discriminatory rental policies of his landlord, Fred Trump, father of... yup. Unknown until the 2010s youtu.be/TmZnlGBhwKg?...

I suppose that Old Man Trump knows just how much racial hate
He stirred up in that bloodpot of human hearts
When he drawed that color line
Here at his Beach Haven family project

Beach Haven ain't my home!
No, I just can't pay this rent!
My money's down the drain,
And my soul is badly bent!
Beach Haven is Trump’s Tower
Where no black folks come to roam,
No, no, Old Man Trump!
Old Beach Haven ain't my home!

I'm calling out my welcome to you and your man both
Welcoming you here to Beach Haven
To love in any way you please and to have some kind of a decent place
To have your kids raised up in.

Beach Haven ain't my home!

My money's down the drain,
