Amsterdam doesn't disappoint. Last time I was here for a Taylor Swift concert. This week I was in town for a conference. Gotta make sure to always plan in some time to enjoy the chill vibes.

New post from @saralouhicks.com about running effective and productive offsites. The title "Shoulder to Shoulder" is about showing up together, as if walking the same road, at the same pace, taking on some of the same risk. It's how Sara and @mathiasmeyer.co showed up to their own company offsite.

I still find the most ironic (and very tech industry) part about this is that Google did solid internal research to convince their engineers on the value of middle management. Shame when CEOs listen more to their gut than to data: hbr.org/2013/12/how-...

Don't really have a lot to add to what Kellan wrote up here on middle managers. Except I had to write 15-18 pages for my term paper, so I had to. It's been a fun research project that I hope to turn into some less scientific writing, tho Kellan already did the work: laughingmeme.org/2026/09/14/m...

I'm currently working on my term paper on how AI reshapes the role of middle managers after I've been peppered with questions about what I think of the great flattening. Couldn't ask for a better and more timely conclusion to my paper: www.businessinsider.com/meta-asks-so...

Gotta say beyond the health benefits of growing your own food and of tending to a garden, what I appreciate so much is the getaway from technology. AI and tech are useless to me in this little haven. And maybe it’s the whole point of having a garden to have a reason to step away.

What also helped was the rain that kept showing up more than in previous years. Brandenburg is usually bone dry over summer. There were some hot days, but the area has been looking lush and green all summer, rather than its usual. Plants and trees seem to have gotten a much needed recovery break.

After two years of late frost leaving our fruit trees fruitless, this has been an absolute banger of a harvest. The tree was so laden with fruit we had to bind branches together for support. The peaches aren’t the greatest for eating, though they are tasty, but make for excellent jam or compote.
So many ripe peaches, freshly harvested.

I was recently asked what the most important tool is for me when working as a CTO. Mulling the answer over, I realised it's not software or any particular way of doing things. It was much simpler than that: the written word. I elaborate on this more over here: mathiasmeyer.co/whats-your-m...

If anything, AI slop may contribute to dividing folks on social media platforms even further. On the other hand, it may also contribute to us realising how important human connection is. Maybe it offers us a counterbalance and an appreciation for the people around us, seeking conversation instead.

I wouldn't consider myself an AI doomsperson. That is stuff for the Marvel universe. Though the signs are certainly there that one could feel that doom. You could of course say that all of this was predictable. What bothers me the most though, is the human impact of all of this.

AI continues to feel like an ouroboros to me, the snake that bites its own tail. Whatever gains are perceived/assumed/purported are then outweighed by the increased effort required to manage whatever those gains product as output.

What happens when you don’t attend to the garden for a week or two. Zukes reach ginormous sizes and become inedible. The heaviest clocks in at about 3kg. Diner mug for scale. It is magical though, just how much energy plants put into producing fruit like these.

To sum up: you should write postcards more often. People genuinely appreciate them and it sure stands out among all the photos we send through Telegram, WhatsApp, and the like. I know I will keep sending more, including birthday cards. So fun!

For me writing them, I get to write whatever I please, something weird about the place I'm at or something surprising that happened to me. Or, to keep it simple, just what the heck I'm doing on these trips or why I'm there.

Mathias Meyer @mathiasmeyer.co · 19/07/2026
Anyhoo, not to be a grumpy old man about it. For me personally, the thought that postcards seem to have become so rare these days and that they can stir a moment of genuine surprise and gratitude is motivation enough to write them. Twenty-three during my recent trips, to be exact.

Puzzling because I found it surprising that people would send me photos. The thank you notes were lovely, though I was also thinking of times when the response would be a phone card or a call, not a digital response. Avoiding those was the whole point of writing a postcard in the first place.

Mathias Meyer @mathiasmeyer.co · 19/07/2026
I've written a whole bunch of postcards on my recent trips and it's been genuinely fun and also slight puzzling to see all the responses I've gotten from folks receiving them. It's usually a photo of the card, sometimes receivers included, together with a thank you note.
