Apparently every pair of #dobble cards have a matching image, but honestly I just can't see it.

I saw some great #maths in action today by Andy (Mr Magic) at the #canfordschool summer fete. Tell me you don't want to try this at home...

The London #sciencemuseum have a great collection of maths history. I saw: A liquid computer for economic differential equations; an old trig circular slide rule; and the analogue computer for tide predictions. Good times all round, strongly recommend. #mathshistory #mathsinmuseums

A train leaves the station (bottom) heading west. Can it return to the station heading east? Is there anywhere the train might get stuck? Is there anywhere the train can reach but only from one direction? I call this directed node networks. #mathsky #graphtheory #math4kids

I just claimed my #tiletoday. A small bridge in my village, forever a digital link to maths history. Claim yours today at www.tile.today , it's free and fun. Just walk somewhere, and claim it for yourself. Like Pokémon go but without the teddies.

I've been struggling to make a joke about how "a man with a hammer sees only nails." Except I have a rusted wheel bearing that I need to hammer "out", whilst a happer typically pushes "in". I was delighted to discover a "slide hammer" Is a real tool. And now I own one. P.s. got the bugger

My first attempt at a #DiscreteDynamicalSystem Take a number, n If (n-1) is prime then map n -> n^2 If (n-1) is composite then map n-> Aliquot sum of (n-1) Numbers 1-19 all end in a cycle. I am not sure about 20. eg. 6 -> 36 -> 13 -> 16 -> 9 -> 7 -> 6. #mathsky #recreationalmaths #mathsart

Follow up from my #alevelmaths student: If you use 2D vectors for a high order polynomial, the resulting plot is, once again, 2D - however it is highly disorganised: Here we see a Quintic Equation. #mathsky
Geogebra plot of P_5(t) with coefficients as 2D vectors, the drawing is almost like a signature.

A great observation from my #Alevelmaths student: If you create a polynomial with vector coefficients $r=a+bt+ct^2+dt^3...$ you can get higher dimensional equivalents of the polynomial. Here is a 3D quartic equation. #mathsky

Dear @tmip.bsky.social #MerryChrisTMiP Love, Ben #mathsky #Christmaths
A fractal tiling of a Christmas card (With a snowflake, Koch snowflake and spiral of tinsel on a cone: Text reading "Merry Christmas TMIP").

The tiling is composed of 78732 individually coloured pentominoes, arranged in batches of 9 to form a larger pentomino, which are in turn arranged in batches of 9, etc etc up to a larger grid of 6*10, 12 top layer pentominoes

Here is an improved mosaic of pentominoes, this time without using a 'tile stamp' method and instead a more organic fill. It contains... F| 565 I| 952 L| 197 N| 196 P| 1068 T| 1116 U| 1040 V| 538 W| 532 X| 396 Y| 2039 Z| 109
A headshot of me created by 8748 individually filled pentominoes, tessellating a rectangle in a near-random arrangement.

Benjamin Cornish @mathematicians-pod.bsky.social · 12/12/2025
Here is a headshot of me made up of 120,000 pentominoes, each given a single colour, averaged against the original jpeg. The 10,000 'tiles' contain all 12 pentominoes and are randomly selected from the available 2339 ways to create a 6*10 tile. Still a work in progress...

A person on #Reddit asked if one person could survive an apocalypse with only the contents of a supermarket for the rest of their lives (ignoring expiry dates) What was the last #FermiApproximation you did ? #mathsky #mathstalk
A Reddit screenshot:

This sounds like a job for a fermi approximation.

I buy a week's food for 2 people when I shop.

I think I visit less than 1 in 1000 items. In that for every 1000 distinct products they sell, I think I have 1 of them.

I think whenever I buy an item there are about 10 on the shelf, and probably another 10 behind the scenes.

So 2x1000x10x2 = 40,000 weeks for 1 person.

The average human lasts 4000 weeks.

So 1 shop can support 10 people their whole lives.
