"How weird they were" Brahe and Kepler's great joint work, the Rudolphine Tables, was compiled under the patronage of the guy who circulated copies of his official portrait to the other (lesser) crowned heads of Europe This official portrait: (good excuse to post my favourite-more in the alt)
Emperor Rudolph the Second of Prague, Holy Roman Emperor, King of the Romans, of the Bohemians, of the Germans and the Italians. King of Hungary, Duke of Austria and, well, frankly far too many different titles at various points in his slightly bonkers life

Official portrait by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, depicts a middle aged Rudolph but every feature is actual a painting of a fruit, vegetable or flower-his ears are maize, his eyebrows peapods, his chest a gourd his neck spring onions. It's a stunningly beautiful, incredibly funny work that was thought lost for centuries until it turned up in a Swedish castle, stolen during their sack of Prague in 1648

Holy shit, I hadn't realised just how remote Cornell is, the population density of the county is 86 per square km, that's roughly half that of Devon (which is famous for its empty moorland and farms) Plus it's roughly as far from The City as Rhyl is from London WTF were the admin thinking? Essays?

She was quite well known for liking the clever men, but I did not know this about Dr Weller
Wiki text: In 2004, Weller completed a master of arts degree in Roman and Renaissance art at Syracuse University, and occasionally taught courses in ancient history at the university. In 2007, he began a PhD at UCLA in Italian Renaissance art history.[12] He defended his dissertation in May 2013, and filed the completed manuscript in October 2013.[13] The dissertation, titled Alberti Before Florence: Early Sources Informing Leon Battista Alberti's De pictura,[2] led to him being awarded his doctorate in 2014.[14][15]

My to read pile is a bookshelf. If a book is boring I'm going to pick up something else, if I go back and am still bored, it's getting donated If your book hasn't got a hook early enough I'm going to be bored, the hook can be anything, but it needs to be there I mean, you want to read this, right?

It's Yorkshire Day I've lived here for 18 years now, it's lovely And West Yorkshire gets the best flag, obviously
The Flag of the West Riding features a "rose-en-soleil" device first used by King Edward IV upon his accession to the throne, combining the White Rose of the House of York with the Sun emblem used by his royal predecessor, Richard II. In essence, the rose-en-soleil is a more elaborate version of the white rose emblem associated with the county and had been previously used by the former West Riding council in its coat of arms. The rose emblem is placed against an offset red cross in Scandinavian style, reflecting the Anglo-Scandinavian history of the region during the era when the Ridings were first established. The cross may be seen therefore as a Nordic cross in English colours, a graphic encapsulation of local heritage and history.

"If you got sent back 75 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?" (as corrected) So, 1950. My Granny was a single mum cleaning houses, she'd soon marry my adoptive grandfather who worked the kitchens at local hotels Mum's side farmed. Could (and have) done all three

Name a quote from a tv show.
Talkie Toaster: I have a third question. A sensible question. A question that will test the limits of your new IQ to its very limits and stretch the sinews of your knowledge to bursting point!
Holly: This is gonna be about waffles, isn't it?
Talkie Toaster (sounding hurt, as it's been caught out): Certainly not. And I resent the implication that I'm a one-dimensional bread-obsessed electrical appliance!
Holly: I apologise, Toaster, what's the question?
Talkie Toaster: The question is this: given that God is infinite, and that the Universe is also infinite...would you like a toasted teacake?

In October 2014 Michael Birch and Xochi Birch, founders of the social networking site Bebo, through a hospitality group named The Collective bought the Farmers Arms public house and Manor House properties in the village. Michael Birch's grandmother was born and lived in the village, and he spent many childhood summers there. The pub, which had closed in December 2012, reopened in September 2018. The Manor House is to be restored and put into use as a hotel. They also own the chip shop, village stores, and several residential properties.[7][8]
