However, primate neurophysiology is definitely more integrated with theory than other subfields of neuro, but this is because the data is very clean and high n (trials/neurons). Many other subfields don’t have that privilege, so they don’t have the statistical power to arbitrate between models.

I think there’s always been a disconnect because the skills required to do either take years to develop. A single primate neurophysiological dataset takes dozens to hundreds of sessions, each taking hours in a day. Training researchers alone takes months, and then training monkeys takes more time.

Super excited to (finally!) show our work on identifying cell types! Now in press www.nature.com/articles/s41.... We show how to identify cell types from ephys recordings *without* optotagging. This opens the study of not just individual cell types, but the interacting neural circuit during behavior

Josh Siegle and I are thrilled to be chairing the first workshop on "Bridging the gap between cell types and spike trains"! We see this as the key link between population-level descriptions of dynamics and real mechanistic understanding from cell types. celltypestospikesworkshop.github.io/2026/

A unifying perspective on neural manifolds and circuits for cognition - Nature Reviews Neuroscience
Neural manifolds can shed light on how heterogeneous neuronal population activity drives neural computations, but linking these insights to the underlying neuronal connectivity is challenging. Engel a...

These reviews on neural manifolds are super relevant to today’s world of large-scale population recordings. How do we link circuits, population geometry, dynamics, and function? “A neural manifold view of the brain” from Perich, Narain, and Gallego 2025 www.nature.com/articles/s41... (1/2)

A neural manifold view of the brain - Nature Neuroscience
Recent advances in neuroscience have revealed how neural population activity underlying behavior can be well described by topological objects called neural manifolds. Understanding how nature, nurture...
