A bold prediction: Telling students to teach themselves through the use of GPT-LLMs, which is currently in fashion, will result in poor learning outcomes. Students aren't teachers. That's why they need us.

The work that "useful" is doing is in Applied Linguistics: How does it help us to do stuff in the real world? I use models of language as a basis to help people learn second & foreign languages. Chomsky's model has been more of a hindrance than a help. Discovering other models has been liberating.

Nope. I like both functional & cognitive models. They're useful in different ways for different tasks. "All models are wrong, some are useful." - George Box Show me how Chomsky's grammar is useful in any way to anyone who isn't a Chomskian linguist, i.e. Is of benefit to the world at large.

Great, so when tech $billionaires tell us all to jump, not only do we have to ask "How high?", we also have to run around changing everything in our education systems & workplaces to accommodate their whims & latest fads... at zero cost and effort to them.

What GPTs generate is plausible because it's vague & generic but persuasively confident & familiar but mediocre. It lacks useful specificity & precision giving the illusion of learning rather than anything meaningful. OK if a student only wants to pass but what if they're genuinely interested?

It's the generation of graphs, illustrations, & explanations by students themselves, that is beneficial for learning but AI generative tools, e.g. Google Gemini/Notebook undermine this. Video (Running time: 0:57:17): www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSzg...

It's hard to predict but my bet would be on countries that start in secondary school & have more intensive lessons, i.e. 3+ hrs/w, will probably outperform countries that start earlier & have fewer hours per week, controlling for the total number of hours from onset up to 15. I could be wrong!
