So this happened.
The program for a Stratford Festival reading of the first two episodes of "The Amateurs", a prequel to "Slings and Arrows", written by Susan Coyne, Bob Martin, and Mark McKinney. The cast of 17 includes all of the original series' regulars as well as current Stratford company members.

This is the kind of thing that drives me nuts about #ForAllMankind: the Soviet administrator's wife (Tasha Polivanova, played by Olga Fonda) has appeared in two episodes, but the captions refer to him by name (Lenya) and her as "spouse". It's pervasive […] [Original post on mastodon.peterjanes.ca]

So, look. I get why Tim Horton's has used this name for their promotion ("Timbits" are their name for doughnut holes, for those not familiar) and I really want the mission to be a success, but I don't want to be the guy who thought it up if things go pear-shaped. Space is hard.
A box of Tim Horton's "moonbits", featuring two spacesuited doughnut holes ("Timbits") floating above the moon with Earth in the distance.

The text on one side reads:

Artemis II Mission

Canada will make history when Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, born and raised in the London, Ontario, area, flies around the Moon as part of Artemis II, the first crewed mission to the Moon since the Apollo missions over 50 years ago. Canada will be only the second country to ever send an astronaut around the Moon.

Another red flag from a Bluesky labeller: engagement farming. The specific account only follows about 400 people, which means it unfollowed over 200 yesterday.
Description for a Bluesky label called "Unfollowed 100+ yesterday": "In a 24-hour period, account both unfollowed at least 25% as many accounts as it newly followed, and unfollowed at least 100 other accounts."

Somehow Bill Watterson published this Calvin and Hobbes comic strip about generative AI 40 years ago.
Panel 1
Hobbes: "What's this?"
Calvin: "A generic snowman."

Panel 2
Calvin: I used to make original snowmen, but it was time-consuming, hard work, so I said, heck, this is crazy!

Panel 3
Calvin: Now I crank out crude imitations of what's already popular! It takes no time or thought, and most people don't care about the difference anyway!

Panel 4
Hobbes: So cynical, yet so practical.
Calvin: And what good is originality if you can't crank it out?

From personal experience this weekend, I now know that it's possible to drive over 500km on a single charge in a Chevrolet Bolt EV.
Google Maps' calculation of a 210km route from my location in London, Ontario to a house in Owen Sound. It claims to be the fastest route with the usual traffic, and saves 3% energy over two slightly shorter routes that would take more time.My car's app showing a current charge of 15% this morning, with an estimate of 81km of range.

Americans are, of course, the most thoroughly and passively indoctrinated people on earth. They know next to nothing as a rule about their own history, or the histories of other nations, or the histories of the various social movements that have risen and fallen in the past, and they certainly know little or nothing of the complexities and contradictions comprised within words like "socialism" and "capitalism." Chiefly, what they have been trained not to know or even suspect is that, in many ways, they enjoy far fewer freedoms, and suffer under a more intrusive centralized state, than do the citizens of countries with more vigorous social-democratic institutions. This is at once the most comic and most tragic aspect of the excitable alarm that talk of social democracy or democratic socialism can elicit on these shores. An enormous number of Americans have been persuaded to believe that they are freer in the abstract than, say, Germans or Danes precisely because they possess far fewer freedoms in the concrete. They are far more vulnerable to medical and financial crisis, far more likely to receive inadequate health coverage, far more prone to irreparable insolvency, far more unprotected against predatory creditors, far more subject to income inequality, and so forth, while effectively paying more in tax (when one figures in federal, state, local, and sales taxes, and then compounds those by all the expenditures that in this country, as almost nowhere else [cont'd]

The idea that Calvin grows up to be Frazz (the cycling musician/school janitor) was quaint. Calvin grew up to become an AI company C-E-bro.
Calvin: "If I had a computer, I'm sure I'd get better grades on my book reports."
Dad: "You'd still have to read the book and tell the computer what you want to say, you know."
