The Akutagawa story with points of view is called In the Grove. The other story, Rashomon, that Kurosawa gets his film title from simply introduces the name of the gate of a city that the film opens with. Film is worth watching, btw.

Cusk's narrators encounter people in two-dimensional form. Perhaps we all do that. But the problem is, why bother putting it into an artful narrative? We know how shallow we are, or can be. But with art, something transformative is possible. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/28/m...

It always dismays when publishers off a prize for language driven writing that they need a pitch and a synopsis. If the language is good, it should be obvious. So what's the synopsis for except as a means of dwindling the pool without putting effort into reading the work?

Granta is like any other publisher. It pretends that it does literature and funds literary prizes to 'prove' it. Marketers, the great human AI content generators before AI create a hall of mirrors reflecting back opinions and self-proclaimed 'greatness'. Where is Thomas Bernhard when you need one?

MasterThief Press @masterthiefpress.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
So, what is AI but an acceleration of what publishing already does? It turns writers and staff into a machine. Granta and British publishing couldn't pass the test set in Everett's novel Erasure of liberal fantasies of the exotic, in a racist ideology. Clearly, the judges can't and don't read much.

Observing the publishing industry from a concerned distance for decades, I find that authors, trained in MA courses, publishers with fixed ideas of next big thing, train readers and writers in modes of thinking about a book. Stylistic repetition and copying are endemic standards of the industry.
