In May, MA generated more electricity from solar than any other source - the first time more power was produced by renewable energy than fossil fuels! Solar keeps our lights on, AND it reduces the need to build out our grid, savings ratepayers hundreds of millions of dollars.

On the hottest day of the year, solar energy helped keep the lights on and saved all ratepayers money by helping reduce peak electricity demand. Bringing more clean energy into MA supports electric affordability AND reliability.
Graphic that includes a time series graph from July 2 showing that solar reduced peak demand by 2,226 megawatts. It also emphasizes the benefits of reducing peak demand: it avoids the need to build costly new electric grid infrastructure and the need for expensive, dirty peaker plants to come online, and it saves money for households and all ratepayers.

Sharing hot weather energy-saving tips. Call Mass 211 (dial 2-1-1) to find cooling centers. Visit www.mass.gov/MEMA for more info. Longer term, energy efficiency upgrades can lower monthly energy use and bills. Heat pumps are highly efficient, and weatherized spaces need less energy to stay cool.
Energy saving tips:
- Close curtains & shades to block heat from the sun
- Seal air leaks around doors, windows & ducts to keep hot air out, cool air in
- Clean or replace filters in AC units as needed to keep them running efficiently
- Fans create a wind-chill effect, but don’t lower room temps. Turn them off in an empty room.
- In summer, ceiling fans should turn counterclockwise
