We actually ran into this issue with the Condensed Black styles for MD System: the italics have a slightly rounder curve in places, like the /o counter, because cubic béziers can’t handle squareness, G2 continuity *and* interpolation smoothness. Fine at intended size, but I wasn’t happy about it
Screenshot of two lowercase o glyphs from MD System. On the left, the Condensed Black has a relatively high curve tension (i.e. it’s quite squarish); on the right, the Condensed Black Italic is just a little more oval.

Type Foundry Directory (typefoundry.directory) is one of the best resources out there for finding independent type designers & foundries. This month, not just the nameplate but the entire site is set in our latest typeface, MD UI — there’s no better specimen than a real-world use case.

Last month was the 25 year anniversary of the legalisation of equal marriage in the Netherlands. To mark the occasion, the Dutch Central Bank and the Royal Mint together issued a limited-run €5 coin, designed by Koos Breen and set in my typeface, MD Nichrome.
Closeup photo of a silver coin balanced on fingertips. The design features a series of concentric circles, mostly cut off on the left side to form a rainbow motif, with each band engraved at a slight angle to create a gradient effect as it catches the light.

The engraved text, in all-caps MD Nichrome, reads ‘25 jaar openstelling van het huwelijk voor iedereen’ (‘25 years of marriage [being] open for everyone’), the two Os of ‘voor’ overlapped like linked rings, and the final word (‘everyone’) set apart and highlighted in the centre of the rainbow. The same coin, tilted slightly to show the gradient effect of the ‘rainbow’ section in a different light.

My 2024–26 entries have been loosely imagined as a trilogy, set in a medieval far future. Their descriptions are all 4-line poems (in alt text).
Is there truth to the tales of the darkness,
Where the light of the Sun God can’t reach?
In the deep, are their camera-eyes watching?
Do mechanical hearts there still beat?
—
Bright red cartridge with super-condensed lettering (‘Sun God’) interrupted by an intense black-and-white sun motif.Awake, brave Knight, for the dawn comes not:
Your duty is not done!
Take up the blade you bore in life.
Bring back to us the Sun.
—
Title lettering in a flared sans typeface (‘O Knight of Many Stars’) above a sword, surrounded by stars and decorative text in pale blue.O Knight, uphold the oath you swore:
Your war is not yet won.
But the night is darkest just before
The rising of the sun.
—
Title lettering (‘Daybreak’) in a tight-spaced blackletter, the same shade of red as Sun God, with supporting elements in the same shade of blue as O Knight of Many Stars.

MD Nichrome, a geometric sans-serif with a strong retro flavour, syncopated proportions. It’s inspired by 70s sci-fi paperback covers, and available in 16 styles (8 weights, from a very thin to a very bold, with matching obliques).MD Polychrome, a typeface based on magnetic ink bank numbers (and the various retro-high-tech fonts they inspired in the 60s and 70s). Available in four styles, loosely corresponding to different print sizes rather than weights.MD IO, a monospaced typeface intended for super-legible text. It’s somewhat futuristic in appearance (but not distractingly so) with strongly textured italics. Available in 16 styles, with weights from very light to very bold.MD Lórien, a slightly ornate serif influenced by Caslon and the 18th century European typefaces which Caslon’s fonts were derived from. It’s available in five weights, with matching italics, swash caps, ligatures, etc. etc.

These icons have been a surprisingly common request, and, less surprisingly, a tricky challenge. The workflow I came up with involves sketching using rectangular pixels in @aseprite.org, and some custom tooling in @glyphsapp.com to snap everything to the typeface’s grid.

Made the call last week to push our late 2025 release to early 2026. The delay might be disappointing, but I feel extremely fortunate that we can take as much time as this project needs. In the meantime, here’s a preview of something else I’ve been working on: MD Thermochrome icons

Nevertheless, there are still a lot of questions about exactly how the new model will work — people care a lot about where (and how) they get their fonts. Reader, just this once, I would ask you to complete a survey. fontstand.com/survey (~15 mins)

Unless the creator makes them public domain, all fonts are subject to a license of some kind. With free fonts, that’s often a very permissive, do-what-you-want license. For other fonts, you pay the designer for the right to use it under specific terms — they still own it, but you can use it.

Nowadays, a font is a piece of software. It contains instructions for a computer to draw the letters and symbols (‘glyphs’) of a typeface, along with a lot of other data. Often a font contains only one variant of a typeface, but fonts containing multiple variants are increasingly common.
Sample data from a font file converted to XML format. It shows some basic headers and metadata, with the <GlyphOrder> section truncated.

A font is the technology that allows a typeface to be used. Historically, this was movable type: a set of individual pieces (‘sorts’), usually made of metal, assembled into lines of text. With movable type, every size, weight and other variant of a typeface needed a separate font.
Black and white photograph illustrating the physical, analogue nature of metal type. (I know, these aren’t actually sorts, they’re punches — part of the manufacturing process — but I don’t have a better photo to hand.)

A typeface is a specific design for a set of letters, numbers, symbols, and so on. Often, that design includes variations, like bold and italics, different widths, or even radically different styles. If these styles all share a name, they’re one typeface.

Here’s how they fit together, in the most straightforward terms: a typeface is what you see, a font is what you use, and a license is what you pay for.

Maybe you’ve heard: every font is free! Since fonts aren’t subject to copyright, you can legally ‘pirate’ them if you use a specific loophole! ...except that’s not really true. I’ve seen this claim repeated quite a lot recently, and it’s missing some pretty important nuance. 🧵 A thread:

If you’re starting a new project this week and reaching for the Lorem Ipsum text, make sure you also testing with real-world copy. Latin always looks great, it’s all n’s and o’s and beautiful rhythm — real text is messy, full of k’s and 5’s and punctuation. Design for the mess!

Cover design for Aaron Parks’ album Little Big III. Dark blue on black, with a series of gradient-shaded circles stacked over each other with offsets to give a sense of depth.

The artist names and album title are set in white, all-caps MD Nichrome on the left side. The logo of the record label, Blue Note, appears bottom left in blue.Reverse cover. Here the blue gradients appear as vertical lines, with the track listing and credits aligned to them as an eccentric grid.

Today I published a huge update to our most popular typeface, MD Nichrome. 450+ new glyphs for massively improved language support, plus a new set of stylistic alternates (the Marvin- & Busorama-inspired ‘Gothic’ set, shown here). Available now. mass-driver.com/typefaces/md...
The text “A New MD Nichrome” sits above a grainy retro-shaded globe covered with the names of languages. The text is set in two weights of MD Nichrome, with the new Gothic Alternates stylistic set enabled.

Since Bluesky now supports video, here’s the release trailer for MD Lórien, my most recent typeface. It’s a digital-first interpretation of Baroque-era Dutch typefaces through the lens of Caslon (which is not exactly easy to represent in abstract visuals)

My new typeface is out today. A quarter of a millennium after William Caslon’s eponymous classic, MD Lórien is a new English interpretation of the Dutch Baroque. mass-driver.com/typefaces/md...
The name of the typeface, ‘MD Lórien’, over an elaborate background of abstract green and gold forms.A list of styles (five weights from Regular to Black, with complementary italics) set in MD Lórien.

I guess hmu if you need to typeset a fantasy novel and/or anthology of romantic verse (only partially joking)
Sample text ‘Queen & King’ set in a gently ornate serif typeface. The word ‘Queen’ is italicised, with an extravagant looped swash Q.
