Here's an analogy I like: AI agents are conscious in the same way that this AI-generated cabbage man is real. Agents can, in certain specific conditions, do a compelling job of imitating the behavior of a person, in the same way that this video renders a compelling-looking cabbage man.

Actually, because I'm still proud of in spite of the fact that it never got published, here's the letter to the editor I wrote. It's possible this was an inadvisably hostile framing for something you're hoping an outlet will actually publish, but I stand by everything I said in it.

At that point, I also wrote a contrasting example of how I thought things might go. Like, "here's what has happened" vs "here's what I thought would happen." I think this can be an effective way to essentially say "this can be a really simple, easy fix" without making someone defensive.

Every time I see something like this I'm going to think of this "Gerrymandering our history" quote now. It's such a perfect way to describe this bullshit.
Kimberlé Crenshaw quote posted by @zinneducationproject in Instagram: "You've heard about gerrymandering our vote, gerrymandering our districts. What I want to talk about is how they gerrymander our history — and how gerrymandering our history is what they are using to undermine our ability to link our present to the past."

Highlighted text: "I called Trump an autocrat, a kleptocrat, a criminal, and a racist, but what I have not called him is a fascist. It is here where I depart from other scholars of autocracy. Fascism requires loyalty to the state. A traditional fascist dictator seeks to embody and expand the state. They see themselves as the exemplars of the state, and the state's preservation and triumph over rival states empowers their personal brand. That is not the case with Trump and much of his cohort, who appear to want the country to collapse. A depopulated, partitioned United States is easier to exploit and control, particularly in a chaotic era of climate change, which they anticipated decades ago.
To them, the state is just something to sell.
They do not care if the buyers are foreign or domestic. The United States of America is merely a landmass to split into oligarch fiefdoms. It inspires no sentimentality and requires no veneration. Its laws are irrelevant, its rights ephemeral, its population disposable. Its history can be rewritten."

Text: "The Pentagon Press Association has been cautious with our public statements since the Defense Department first announced it would force reporters to make a choice: sign onto rules creating unprecedented restrictions on our ability to report the news, or end our historically-held access to the Pentagon.
This caution was meant to support efforts to negotiate revisions to the document the Defense Department is requiring our members to sign to secure new credentials, in place of valid badges that are being taken away - the kind we've always worn.
Unfortunately, those negotiations have not been as successful as we had hoped."Text: "We acknowledge and appreciate that the Pentagon is no longer requiring reporters to express agreement with the new policy as a condition for obtaining press credentials. But the Pentagon is still asking us to affirm in writing our "understanding" of policies that appear designed to stifle a free press and potentially expose us to prosecution for simply doing our jobs.
The new credentialing policy also leaves open the threat of the Department of Defense revoking credentials for reporters who exercise their First Amendment rights by
seeking information that hasn't been pre-approved for formal release, even when the information is entirely unclassified. The policy conveys an unprecedented message of intimidation to everyone within the DoD, warning against any unapproved interactions with the press and even suggesting it's criminal to speak without express permission
- which plainly, it is not."Text: "We were also surprised and disturbed to learn through the new policy statement that the Pentagon plans to move all of our news organizations from our dedicated workspaces. While we don't know the location to which the Pentagon is preparing to move the press corps, we can surmise from restrictions imposed earlier this year that the changes will further isolate reporters, making it harder to interact even with the spokespeople inside the Pentagon who are entrusted to approve information for public release.
Let's be clear about the facts. Pentagon reporters have always worn badges, and continue to do so to this day. Pentagon reporters have always been restricted to unclassified spaces only- the idea that reporters have been prowling in offices where they are not allowed is simply preposterous.
And reporters have a constitutional right to ask questions."Text: "Every political administration going back to the 1950s -- including the first Trump administration -- has allowed the same level
of access. This press access has never precipitated the kind of national security crisis feared by the current leadership of the department.
Limiting the media's ability to report on the
U.S. military fails to honor the American families who have entrusted their sons and daughters to serve in it, or the taxpayers responsible for giving the department hundreds of billions of dollars a year. The American people deserve to know how their military is being run. They deserve more information from this administration, not less.
We hope the Pentagon reconsiders."

I always think of this quote (from They Knew by Sarah Kendzior) when people say this. "'nobody saw it coming' is an admission of whom the speaker considers to be nobody"
Text from "They Knew" by Sarah Kendzior:

As I wrote in Hiding in Plain Sight, the oft-recited claim that
"nobody saw it coming" is an admission of whom the speaker considers to be nobody. In the United States, "nobody" historically included women, immigrants, poor people, and anyone who is not white. People dismissed as nobody are those most likely to be affected by a terrible situation and therefore the most likely to warn about it in advance. "Somebody" is a similarly convoluted category. For centuries, to be somebody in the United States meant to be a wealthy white man or to be treated like one. This idea of "somebody" is baked into the founding of the country, in which only white male landowners were granted the right to vote. White, land-owning men who deviated from the establishment were often punished for their efforts: castigated as troublemakers or conspiracy theorists. The goal was to reduce them, at least in their ability to gain institutional support, to the status of "nobody."

From Sarah Kendzior's "Hiding in Plain Sight", pp 58: "Mueller’s speech is a blueprint laying out how the Trump team, backed by an organized crime syndicate, and abetted by transnational alliances that would have been unthinkable a decade before, rose to power by blurring the lines between white-collar crime, mafia activity, and state corruption. It describes with uncanny accuracy the economic devastation ordinary Americans experienced from 2008 onward, and attributes it to unfettered criminal corruption that Mueller promised the FBI would combat—but it did not. Under the leadership of James Comey, who replaced Mueller as FBI head in 2013, the FBI removed Mogilevich—the dangerous Russian mafia head who had been ancillary to Trump since the 1980s—from the Ten Most Wanted list in December 2015 and replaced him with a bank robber.19 Comey never explained why Mogilevich’s removal was warranted when Mogilevich was still participating in the same extreme criminal activity that had compelled Mueller to name him a threat so profound “he will remain [on the Ten Most Wanted list] until he is captured” just four years before. The removal of Mogilevich was highly unorthodox: he was only the seventh top-ten fugitive since 1950 to be removed from the list prior to apprehension, death, or dismissal of charges.20 The FBI’s official explanation was that Mogilevich “no longer poses an immediate threat to the public” and that he is residing in a country without an extradition treaty. Yet when the FBI originally placed Mogilevich on the list in October 2009, they noted that “what makes him so dangerous is that he operates without borders.”21 The FBI did not name Mogilevich’s current location, but his unnerving power is that, in many ways, it no longer matters.

Writing Trump’s history is a bizarre exercise in parsing layers of propaganda. There is the propaganda written in real time by Trump’s press lackeys (sometimes with anonymous quotes that"From Sarah Kendzior's "Hiding in Plain Sight", pp 181: "As evidence mounted, however, accepting Trump’s assertion that he had “nothing to do with Russia”1 became an act of willful denial. Trump asked Putin to get him Clinton’s emails at a July 27 press conference; the RNC platform was altered by Paul Manafort in August to appease his Kremlin-friendly oligarch benefactors by reducing aid to Ukraine.2 That same month, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid warned that the threat from Russia “is more extensive than is widely known and may include the intent to falsify official election results”—a damning assertion that received little attention.3 In October, Hillary Clinton proclaimed from the debate stage that Trump was a puppet of Putin—an evidence-based claim that was framed by much of the media as a subjective smear. The Obama administration largely remained silent, but finally admitted on October 7 that “the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from U.S. persons and institutions, including from U.S. political organizations.”4 But that admission—an admission of a foreign attack—was drowned out by the release of the Access Hollywood video the same day. On October 28, James Comey reignited suspicion against Clinton by declaring that an FBI investigation of her emails had been reopened. The FBI targeting of Clinton, who turned out to be innocent, and simultaneous silence on Trump prompted a second letter from Reid, who stated: “In my communications with you and other top officials in the national security community, it has become clear that you possess explosive information about close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his top advisors, and the Russian government … The public has a right to know this information.”5 Reid accused Comey of violating the Hatch Act, a federal law that prohibits partisan activity by federal employees."From Sarah Kendzior's "Hiding in Plain Sight", pp 175: "Then there is the FBI. During the Bush and Obama eras, two former heads of the FBI, William Sessions and Louis Freeh, began working as attorneys for the Russian mafia they used to fight. In 1997, Sessions traveled to Moscow and came back warning the world that the Russian mafia, headed by Semion Mogilevich, posted a severe threat to global stability—but a decade later, Mogilevich became his client. Louis Freeh, who succeeded Sessions, took on Russian clients including Prevezon, a real estate firm accused by the US government of laundering more than $200 million in a Russian tax fraud scheme, after his tenure in the FBI ended. Prevezon is the same company whose scandal culminated in the death of Sergei Magnitsky.

Most of this activity is technically legal, but exceptionally strange. The Magnitsky Act was supposed to punish oligarchs and curb their influence. It offered clear moral and legal guidelines, and its importance as a foundational document was enhanced when Russia illicitly influenced our election and helped install a Kremlin puppet as president. Why did so many officials who had sworn to protect the United States, including two FBI heads, go on to work with the Russian mafia? Why would this be an attractive prospect after they themselves had alerted the world to the mafia’s danger? There are plenty of routes to personal profit. Why choose the one that is in direct ethical conflict with current US policy and may endanger your country?"The cover of "Hiding in Plain Sight: The Invention of Donald Trump and the Erosion of America" by Sarah Kendzior
