Assuming basement is for storage, swap it out for an attic and the stairs down become a ladder up. Solved! :p

Have faith in the orange overlord, this is his grand plan to save the planet by making Americans turn to EVs!

Earlier today I discovered that the profile with my car maker (for its online functionality) offers, among others, Earl, Lord, Baroness. I was sorely tempted..

Where I work, most developers' take on LLMs is "can be useful for isolated use cases, but huge amount of irrational FOMO driven forced adoption." We did have an "AI first" type manager. He no longer works here. I hope that's the direction we stick with, but who knows.

Wasn't the impeachment for him lying under oath when questioned about it (i.e. denying it had happened) rather than the act itself?

None of those seem very realistic for someone living in a very rural out of the way area. "Owning stuff sucks," are you a secret member of the "you'll own nothing and be happy" club? :p Yeah, cars are insanely expensive to own. But the flexibility it provides is worth a lot to many.

We'll just have to remain in disagreement on that point. I think the sheer pace, scale and increased power consumption compared to previous data centers, makes this not comparable to historical experience and the prudent course of action is to take a pause and evaluate.

Sounds like we're broadly in agreement, then. Although, I'd probably be more conservative than you, if we were making the calls. When it comes to environmental impact, better safe than sorry as it can be hard to undo.

That could be true, I wouldn't know. But I do know local authorities can't necessarily be trusted to make good decisions with so much money going around, so there's that. A politician calling "whoa, let's calm down and have a good look at this," seems to me to be one following their job description.

My point was that high demand should not be a free pass to ignore regulations. If anything, that should go double when the demand is artificially fueled by a tech bubble.

If you hardly drive, then it really doesn't matter if your car has a combustion engine or not. Drive what you can afford to get, with a clean conscience.

If evidence was ever needed that global finances is basically just gambling, the fact oil prices plummet every time an announcement of something *possibly* happening is made, by a known pathological liar, is all it should take.

That wasn't really my point. It's the "it's AI, the world will end unless number keeps going up exponentially, so we just build and ask permission later" type of mentality that's rolling over any sensible regulatory process. "Normal" data centers did get built in this haphazard manner.

There are some differences in the pace of things. In the past, we did not throw trillions at them overnight for indiscriminate building. It has gotten to the point of local use of jet turbines for power generation because there's not enough electricity available. It's effectively out of control.

I think that's fine, in general, but not all that compatible with putting "senior position" in the job description.

I have a friend who owns a vacation home in the US. I remember the incredulity I felt when he explained how one particular bill could only be paid by check. I don't think I've seen one used where I live since the 80s or early 90s.

I was told a couple of years ago that I was "not a good fit" for a job where I had professional experience in _every single_ bullet point on their list. In the case of the major items, almost 30 years worth of it. I wonder if that really meant "we'd prefer someone cheap."

The midterms _is_ Plan B. Plan A was the 2024 election, and they botched it. I suspect there is no viable Plan C. I'm not even sure Plan B stands a chance, given how much more power the regime has been granted to corrupt elections now compared to in 2024.

I find that learning using an LLM can be pretty great. Instead of hitting up google and looking through a bunch of hits for something close to what I'm trying to figure out, the LLM makes suggestions based on my exact use case. The caveat being that you then do the actual implementation yourself.

I figure reality will be a more nuanced: everywhere between a huge drop, to a huge win, depending on use case and how it's applied. My personal rule of thumb, that I tell my bosses, is more or less "maybe 20% is a realistic potential gain, probably not worth the token cost".

An old boss of mine put a note on the department notice board that went something like (it wasn't in English, so this is my attempt at translating) "Great is he who knows, greater is he who knows whom to ask."

Meanwhile, in Scandinavia, employer pops head into employee's office: "Hey, got a new project starting in two weeks. How's your time looking?" "I should have about 50% available in two weeks." "Cool, I'll put you down for that." (Also, most of that infographic would be outright illegal.)

"Meow." I pause movie. "Meow." I'm puzzled. I don't have a cat. "MEOW." There's a cat at the top of my living room stairs, looking at me. Apparently, it snuck in while I was airing the place out last night and was hiding somewhere until now. That explains my incessant sneezing all day.

How strange. I looked up Mullvad, they seem reputable enough and I see no other mentions of them and similar issues. Here's to hoping it's not a temporary reprieve. I switched away from Google to a paid search service last year, that's how much I've grown to dislike Google.

I guess you've managed to get some browser hijacking malware. :( Apparently it's a bit of a thing, enough so for there to be some buzz about "the yahoo redirect malware". If you pay close attention, does the address bar "flicker past" some other URLs before ending on yahoo?

I did a search and it looks like the most likely explanation is your Chrome settings. I found multiple reports of people with similar issues fixing it by doing some cleanup in "Manage search engines and site search" in settings. Might be worth a shot.

I hope there's a market for this. I kinda doubt it, though. But, if they're taking preorders and not manufacturing way too many units, I don't suppose there's all that much risk involved.

I gave up on IPv6 some years ago as myself. I realized that in many cases I was getting a fraction of the speed of an IPv4 connection. Whether due to my equipment or everything being "IPv6 as a side thought or test," I don't know. But I couldn't be bothered to investigate.

To each their own. I'm lazy and have seen no reference to that site anywhere else than Bluesky, so blocking it here is sufficient for me for now. If it ends up getting spammed elsewhere as well, I'll block it centrally in my pihole.

I was practically part of the delivery team at the birth of this space, so I've been through a lot. :) I could find no way to block specific links in Bluesky, but a regular word/tag mute for the domain seems to do the trick.

I don't normally use my phone for this, but I decided to test and yep, it's a phone thing. On desktop it goes straight to a normal web page, on a phone is goes to the app store. I told my phone browser to "use desktop site" and that worked. I'd rate this a malicious site, so best avoided.
