District corruption!! (I personally love stinky cheese though)

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 08/10/2026

It could have the opposite effect, families feeling safer with some protections vs none. I also predict that if successful it will expand to all high schools so as not to stigmatize. And honestly, look at the sad history of gun violence in schools in this country. It can happen anywhere.

It is better than stinky cheese I suppose

I could be proven wrong but I believe it is some people being dramatic about some normal not-all-that-bright field lights that will enable kids to play sports in the Big Dark. I would like lights in the fields near me, please.

I think you missed the intro where Rep Jen told us that the operations committee got a presentation and were told that the lights are not a problem/nuisance 🤐

I'm sorry but I can't even follow Seattle geography when I'm staring at the map. Like how does that road go there 🙃

so far speakers are on point, dang

I'm confused what's up with Cleveland. This list shows them losing >30 students, but also enrollment is up according to www.reddit.com/r/seattlepub... ?

I see the schools that lost students, any way to see which ones gained the most?

Sound is returned! But no visual.

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

OMG it's too late to edit but that was supposed to be BOS not POS 🤦‍♀️. I am a fan of this superintendent (not uncritically).

021

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

I'd also be very shocked if either the board policy or the CBA does not allow for exceptions in extreme cases? Like can you grab a kid to prevent them from falling off a cliff? I guess I am curious to understand more about Rankin's objection here.

100

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

I'd expect the Union to take a stance of "we're not expecting our teachers to physically intervene" (for their own protection and that of the kids) so that seems surprising.

100

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

Let's assume that the board directed POS to change the terms of the CBA to match policy established by the board. Either he just didn't do it at all, which seems unlikely, or SEA pushed back. Why?

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

Who is going to be the hero who digs up the specific language on this? Highly sus especially in light of the issues surrounding SEA president. 😞

Director Rankin, thank you for your service, I say this as sincerely as possible please take this up in therapy we beg you

It wouldn't be a board meeting without beating the "back in my day" SOFG dead horse

Oh good we're getting another history (revision) lesson

We have a secretary of cars? Is there also a secretary of trains because I want that job

020

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 01/09/2026

I'm so tired of having to turn the whole dang car on if someone leaves a window down, or running to find keys if it starts to rain.

010

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 01/09/2026

What?? This is dumb. The obvious improvement is make windows that you can roll up manually if needed.

110

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 27/08/2026

Wait does anyone know if the teachers voted yet?

010

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 27/08/2026

Thank you as usual for your service. I hope you have a restful evening with no lights or noise or birds.

I love Chris!! Chris can talk at every single meeting he is a gem 💎 I very much unironically enjoy his 27 point memos.

I stepped away and came back to "balls over the fence"

010

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 27/08/2026

Being annoying I'd like to see the members who talk all the damn time turn over the mic to community members they purport to serve once in awhile.

230

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 27/08/2026

Isn't that what we had that wasn't effective

100

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 20/08/2026

And I DO understand that probably a lot of the "this is law" was coming from the district side and holding back board members. That sucks. We have a new, aligned superintendent now so the thing to do is just run run run. You hold the House and Senate and presidency! Stop complaining about Biden!

000

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 20/08/2026

In a situation of limited resources, it is both SMART and NECESSARY to think about who is already doing work that you can piggyback off of. I'm so bummed we lost the City Year contract over one bad actor, because that was a perfect case of getting additional caring adults in the schools for cheap.

010

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 20/08/2026

You know who is ALWAYS at those events? - the charter schools - the private schools - every single King County and City of Seattle department - sometimes there is a llama and that's cool

110

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 20/08/2026

His comment about working with community orgs so they can do the heavy lifting is so on point. There are so many resources in our community where SPS just needs to show up! All summer, I can't leave my house without bumping into an event or festival of some kind. Is there ever a SPS booth? Never!

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 20/08/2026

I have known her to show up at community meetings with no childcare or food and without making a fuss she will order pizza and break out coloring books. She's the best. 💖

Song and LaValle showing "ok that's nice but we're going to run our committees efficiently"

Mary Dickson @marythought.bsky.social · 20/08/2026

So much of all of this boils down to good leadership and common sense. Empowered principals, board leaders, teachers. I'm relatively new on the scene but have seen so much drama over non-existent rules. Someone said something in passing in the past and now it's LAW.
