We saw program gains, too. UMass Amherst's computer science program rose to No. 28, and UMass Dartmouth's psychology program climbed 37 spots, while its business program rose 18 spots.

UMass Boston ranks No. 40 in the nation for social mobility, and UMass Lowell rose 35 spots on that list. Those numbers represent real students whose lives are changing because of a UMass degree.

What matters most to me is why. U.S. News now bases more than half of each school's score on student outcomes: whether students graduate, how Pell-eligible recipients succeed, and what graduates go on to earn.

The 2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings are out, and I'm proud of what they show about UMass. UMass Amherst rose 5 spots to No. 24 among public universities, and No. 59 nationally. UMass Lowell climbed to No. 74 among publics, and UMass Boston jumped 12 spots to No. 106.

Chancellor Suárez-Orozco took the helm of UMass Boston in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most difficult periods for university leaders to navigate, and more than six years later, he will be leaving UMass Boston in a far stronger position.
