Something new for me: I am taking part in the Hampton Court Half Marathon on Sunday 23rd March and raising money for Crisis, a national charity addressing homelessness. Your donations would make a big difference. Thank you! www.justgiving.com/page/martin-...

A statement from Vice-Chancellor Prof Irene Tracey following the UK Government’s renewed focus on the Oxford/Cambridge corridor:
“Oxford University welcomes the new growth commission and the government’s renewed focus on the Oxford/Cambridge corridor.

The Oxford-Cambridge region is a powerhouse of innovation and an economic crown jewel, driven by world-leading universities that spin-out as well as attract globally pioneering companies.

As a supercluster, we create thousands of jobs and attract millions in investment that benefits local and national efforts for growth and prosperity through partnerships, such as that between Oxford and Birmingham.

Our efforts additionally bring transformative societal and health benefits that go beyond life sciences and tech with our recognised strengths in the creative arts and humanities.”

Professor Sir @martinlandray.bsky.social, Joint Chief Investigator for RECOVERY, explains what makes the #RECOVERYTrial appropriate for investigating flu treatments below. 😷👇 @medsci.ox.ac.uk @ox.ac.uk @ndm.ox.ac.uk
‘RECOVERY was designed to provide a robust test of possible treatments for COVID-19 whilst keeping the burden on hospital staff and the health system to a minimum. This approach led to the discovery of effective treatments for COVID-19, such as dexamethasone, which have now saved hundreds of thousands of lives around the world. We are now expanding this approach to tackle the long-term challenge of influenza.’

Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology
Joint Chief Investigator of the RECOVERY trial

Extraordinary: Raoult’s damaging paper on hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 finally retracted. So grateful to all the people who helped with the RECOVERY trial, allowing us to debunk the myth of hydroxychloroquine for severe COVID-19 (& to discover treatments that went on to save thousands of lives)

“Atlas of cells transforms understanding of human body” Sometimes the only rational response is “Wow!” There are some mighty people out there, working together and transforming our scientific understanding. Amazing! www.bbc.com/news/article...

Also from the Faster Cures conference: Regulation (clinical trials, AI and more) must: 1. Protect patients and participants from harm (I’d argue that harm can only be considered in context of benefit) 2. Preserve flexibility for discovery, innovation and entrepreneurship. 1/3

Just heading home from Faster Cures conference in DC. Great speakers, including many past & present federal health agency leaders and politicians. But quote of the week goes to Ashwin Vasan (ex-Health Commissioner, New York): “Health is Freedom!” Well said.
