Because viruses linger in the air like smoke, a multi-pronged approach including masking, vaccines, and clean air all work together to keep ourselves and our children safe. Our children in the sense of the village. Our children in the Baldwinian sense. Use W.A.T.C.H to keep clean air in classrooms
Clean Air
In Classrooms Using.
W.A.T.C.H

Windows:
- Open windows as much as possible.
- If it's cold outside, even cracking windows slightly can help.
- Keeping the classroom door open helps circulate the air even more.
- Warm weather? Having 2 windows open while using a fan to blow air out of 1 of the windows is optimal.

Air Movement
- Check to see if you feel air coming from the diffusers or air vents. Attach a robon to the vent for an easy visual cue that it's working!

Thermostat
Keep the FAN setting ON when the room is being occupied. AUTO is ok to use when the room is going to be unoccupied.

C02 Levels
Use a CO2 monitor with a nondispersive
infrared (NDIR) sensor

< 600 ppm: Very Good
600 - 800 ppm: Good
800 - 1000 ppm: Acceptable
1000 - 1500 ppm: Poor
> 1500 ppm: Very Poor
* HEPA filters do not change CO2 levels.

HEPA Filter or Corsi-Rosenthal Box
- Use the highest setting. * Noise permitting

- Disable Features like:
• Ionization
• Plasma
• UV with Catalyst
• Auto

CORST-ROSENTHAL PLACEMENT IS IMPORTANT
• Move away from walls & corners (05 m - 15 ft)
• Place as close as you can to the centre of the room.
• Avoid blowing directly at anyone.
• Face away from walls & obstructions, e.g. blowing under a table.
• Raised is better than on the floor.
• Keep away from clean air sources open windows, air vents & other HEPA filters.
• If you have multiple HEPA filters, space them out evenly.

The science behind safer indoor gatherings:

1. Infected individuals breathe out viral particles that stay in the air like smoke.

2. Breathing in those particles causes infections.

3. The particles spread in indoor spaces across the entire space, and stay in the air for hours, if there isn't enough ventilation.

4. If you walk into a room where a sick person was present in the last few hours, the particles are still there.

5. Ventilation and air purification reduce the particle density and should be part of guidelines to fight the pandemic.

6. Masks filter the viral particles from the air when worn by someone who is infected and filter the particles from coming in when worn by someone not infected.

7. High quality N95/KN95/KF94/FFP2
masks with good fits prevent infection, reducing infection rates by 1000X when worn by infected and uninfected.

PLEASE protect your children from Covid.

It's not over, it's not mild, it's not a cold. Covid is a leading cause of death in children and adults.

Most of Covid is spread in schools. Covid may seem mild to your child but it can affect every organ, including the brain. And each re-infection causes more health issues. Covid reduces immunity to other illnesses.

1 in 4 children who get Covid will likely have some form of long Covid. Long Covid is chronic illness (life long) and possibly disabling. There are no cures or treatments currently for long Covid.

To protect your child have them wear a mask. Vaccines reduce risk of hospitalization and death but offer little protection from long Covid. Masks reduce the risk of long Covid significantly.
Your school should also have proper ventilation and filtering in classrooms.

The news and public health aren't typically covering this or are minimizing this because the government wants you to keep the economy moving.

• Covid is still here and hasn't gotten any milder.
• Covid is a leading cause of death in children
• Covid is much more dangerous than the flu or cold.
• More than 70% of US household COVID spread started with a child at school.
• 25% of children (1 in 4) who get Covid will likely have some form of long Covid
• Long Covid affects most organs of the body, including the brain and heart..
• Long Covid can be debilitating, even for healthy kids.
• Vaccines reduce the risk of hospitalization and death but do not provide a lot of protection against getting Covid and very little to prevent long Covid
• Many children can be spreading Covid without symptoms or realizing they have it.
• Masks reduce Covid in schools.
• Masks do not harm children and do not impact language development.
• Outside is lower risk but masks still should be worn when close to others
Mask to protect them.

“Infers ‘highly personal attributes’ about your race, religion, and politics from viewing patterns” “This isn't just Netflix…Plug your laptop into the TV for a video call? Screenshot. Cast family photos? Catalogued. Pull up your bank statement on the big screen? Screenshot taken, matched, sold.”
What Your Smart TV Actually Does

ACR (Automatic Content Recognition) is the surveillance feature built into every smart TV sold in the last decade. Here's what it does [1]:
• Captures a screenshot of your screen every 500 milliseconds, that's two per second
• Matches those screenshots against a content database to identify what you're watching
• Sends viewing data to the manufacturer and their advertising partners
• Logs content from HDMI ports: cable boxes, gaming consoles, laptops, everything
• Infers "highly personal attributes" about your race, religion, and politics from viewing patterns

This isn't just Netflix and cable TV. Plug your laptop into the TV for a video call? Screenshot. Cast family photos? Catalogued. Pull up your bank statement on the big screen? Screenshot taken, matched, sold.

User Christopher Webb @cwebbonline.com posts the famous black & white photo of Gloria and Dorothy with fists in the air. His post ends with emoji fists that represent each woman. It reads:

This iconic 1971 photo of Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes has always said so much without saying a word.

Two women. Two raised fists. One shared fight for equality.

Dorothy passed in 2022. Now Gloria is gone too.

Rest in power, Gloria.

Gracious cotton plantation is kinda wild, no?
This is the same country where The Birth of a Nation was once the biggest box-office hit of all time and where Gone With the Wind still is. Dolly Parton is right about one thing: Dixie Stampede is as American as America gets.

Just look at the reviews. "The only suggestion I have is to cut out the part where they talk about the 'cotton plantation' and how gracious it was," complains one visitor to the Pigeon Forge show on TripAdvisor. "This is 2015 and it's just not tasteful any more to refer to mint juleps and southern belles when those plantations were places of such terrible suffering for so many people." She also complimented the stunts and the food, headlining her review, "Trick riders! I ate a whole chicken!" Like most reviewers, she gave it five stars.

A post on Threads by Sydney Colson, WNBA player, in response to a post by Kenyon Martin, a former NBA player. Kenyon’s post is in the wake of Enes Freedom’s campaign of transphobia that included walking on court during an active WNBA basketball game to antagonize Natasha Cloud.

2. The W's prob right now is just cis men, unsurprisingly 🫢

A cis man, btw, is someone whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth. I'm guessing u were assigned male at birth and that's something you've agreed with all your life.

Ways to pushback (that won’t get you on the no-fly list 😂) : Complain to the flight attendants Record and complain to airline Blast music so they can’t post the video due to copyright All of those go extra for Christians who don’t like it because your protestations won’t be dismissed as hating
Screenshot from the article reads:

“There are ways to push back, though.

While flight attendants may be hesitant to tell an evangelist to be quiet, it’s a lot easier to do it when other passengers make that specific request. They can say the preaching is disturbing, document it on their phones, and complain to the airline later—at some point, the bad publicity for the airline could pressure them to set ground rules about what sort of outbursts are acceptable. They can also, as one Reddit user suggested, blast popular music over the preaching so that the evangelist can’t post this sermon online without running afoul of copyright issues.

Or they can remind the evangelist of Matthew 6:5.

Other Christians have an especially important role here, too. If they believe faith shouldn’t be imposed like this, they should be the loudest people condemning this behavior—in real time if they’re fellow passengers and later if they hear about it.”

Came across these sketches of old buildings in the Black community in St. Mary's county from an old cookbook. Feels like a crossover episode for my special interests.
Black and white drawing of two large buildings in a rural setting (one in the foreground) and a path that connects them both. The main building has two-stories and the structural supports in the front indicate an addition was built on top of an original structure. Beneath the drawing is the caption:

ST. PETER CLAVER CHURCH AND CONVENT-1918
First St. Peter Clover church was erected in 1814 to serve the Black congregation of St. Ignoes Parish. The church was dedicated in 1918. The convent was erected in 1924 with an addition in 1928. Black and white drawing of a small, rustic building with two entrances and basic stairs. Beneath the drawing is the caption:
OLD BUDDS CREEK SCHOOL
Old Budds Creek School is one of approximately 25 one and two room schools attended by Blacks in St. Mary's County prior to 1956.

Black and white drawing of a stately building with columns, terraces, and architectural flourishes. The entrance is flanked by topiaries and to the right of the building is a large tree. Below the drawing the caption reads:

CARDINAL GIBBONS INSTITUTE
1924
Cardinal Gibbons Institute, modelled after the Tuskegee project, was the first Black high school in St. Mary's County. The school was established in 1924 and served the community until 1967.Black and white drawing of a sizable one-story building with 12 windows across the front. Below the drawing is the caption:

BANNEKER SCHOOL
Banneker School, Loveville, MD was erected in 1930. Black countians donated the land and completed the construction of the building. This school served the northern area of St. Mary's County until a new structure was erected in 1950 on the same site.

Reminds me of a passage from Robin Wall Kimmerer's book, "Serviceberry"
Square image with a pale pink background overlaid with a darker pink sketch of two hands holding a serviceberry plant. Over top of the sketch is a quote that reads: This pail of [Serviceberries] represents hundreds of gift exchanges that led up to my blue-stained fingers: the Maples who gave their leaves to the soil, the countless invertebrates and microbes who exchanged nutrients and energy to build the humus in which a Serviceberry seed could take root, the Cedar Waxwing who dropped the seed, the sun, the rain, the early spring flies who pollinated the flowers, the farmer who wielded the shovel to tenderly settle the seedlings. They are all parts of the gift exchange by which everyone gets what they need.

"According to Kavanaugh’s concurrence in that decision, this rationale extends to any “reasonable suspicion, based on specific articulable facts, that the person being questioned…is an alien illegally in the United States.” As such, ICE was effectively also permitted to use the fact that someone ‘looks’ trans—regardless of whether or not they actually are—as the “specific articulable fact” allowing its officers to question, harass, detain, and even deport both citizens and non-citizens—as long as it has a reason to claim that being trans makes a person more likely to be in the US illegally.

Now, the Trump administration has given ICE the reason it needs. Under this rule, ICE agents now have the enforcement rationale to assert that trans people—especially those belonging to racial minority groups—are more likely than cis people to have “misrepresented” themselves during the visa process and, therefore, are more likely to have entered the country “unlawfully.” Like the other factors ICE uses, this will burden both citizens and non-citizens, as ICE cannot reliably determine whether or not a person is a citizen without physically checking their documents.

Thus, ICE will be free to scrutinize trans people’s documents and detain those whose documents show any inconsistencies—where they face a heightened risk of sexual violence now that ICE has removed the protections for trans people in its custody and additionally have their medications withheld. Given that Kansas has left its trans residents with no way to identify themselves after it revoked their documents, this also has the potential to burden the state’s trans community with another devastating repercussion of the extreme law."

Right up there with publishing AI-generated articles about "slang words from Black Twitter".
Screenshot from the article linked in the post with the relevant part highlighted. The article investigates whether AI was used by a writer to fabricate articles and pitches. One sentence mentions that she published an article about Black Twitter slang. It is the same sort of selling out of our culture that the guy behind the AI gospel artist is doing. Taking community cultural creations, whether slang or music, and using it for personal gain.

The highlighted part of the article reads as follows:

A story she published in October headlined “20 iconic slang words from Black Twitter that shaped pop culture”—which was syndicated across dozens of small-town American newspapers desperate for content, from northeast Mississippi to Waynesville, North Carolina—contains lines like “‘Brazy’ is another word for ‘crazy,’ replacing the ‘c’ with a ‘b.’”

This kinda reminds me of when D'Angelo briefly mentioned the punk/rock/metal scene in DC & VA in an interview and how down in Richmond they would have a battle of the bands and he just wanted to be good enough to be in a band
An excerpt from Ralph Ellison's Shadow and Act essay: "Some of the most brilliant of jazzmen made no records; their names appeared in print only in announcements of some local dance or remote "battles of music" against equally uncelebrated bands. Being devoted to an art which traditionally thrives on improvisation, these unrecorded artists very often have their most original ideas enter the public domain almost as rapidly as they are conceived to be quickly absorbed into the thought and technique of their fellows. Thus the riffs which swung the dancers and the band on some transcendent evening, and which inspired others to competitive flights of invention, become all too swiftly a part of the general style, leaving the originator as anonymous as the creators of the architecture called Gothic."

"I want to be famous to shuffling men who smile while crossing streets, sticky children in grocery lines, famous as the one who smiled back. I want to be famous in the way a pulley is famous, or a buttonhole, not because it did anything spectacular, but because it never forgot what it could do."
A poem, "Famous" by Naomi Shihab Nye, that reminds us to never forget what we can do.

It reads:
The river is famous to the fish.
The loud voice is famous to silence, which knew it would inherit the earth before anybody said so.
The cat sleeping on the fence is famous to the birds watching him from the birdhouse.
The tear is famous, briefly, to the cheek.
The idea you carry close to your bosom is famous to your bosom.

The boot is famous to the earth, more famous than the dress shoe, which is famous only to floors.
The bent photograph is famous to the one who carries it and not at all famous to the one who is pictured.

I want to be famous to shuffling men who smile while crossing streets, sticky children in grocery lines, famous as the one who smiled back.
I want to be famous in the way a pulley is famous, or a buttonhole, not because it did anything spectacular, but because it never forgot what it could do.

Next to you's the nurse, the cleaner, the doctor, the child-minder, the waiting, the hoping, the barely surviving, the can't-get-out-of-bed-can't-sleep-can't-cope. There's the teacher out of work, the disaffected priest, the taxi driver, the shopkeeper, broke shareholder, tourists, retirees, waitresses, bankers, administrators, the tired and committed, the excited and the stressed.

I know you expect me to bless you in the mysteries of God,
but I prefer the strangeness of each other, darlings. Look around.

"Ask yourself and ask each other: Of what future are these the wild, early days? Let us braid all the threads between us into a wick. Let the fire that was always there, waiting for this moment, finally find its way home."
Excerpt from a piece titled “Blessing (All the Threads Between Us)” from the book “Not a Lot of Reasons to Sing, But Enough” by Kyle Tran Myhre. It reads:

We choose to fight, not because we have done the math and know what is going to happen tomorrow. We choose to fight because we do not know. We choose to fight because doubt is real, and faith is real, and hope is real, and none of them are as real as our hands, as the neighbor standing next to us, as the ancestors watching over our shoulders.

It is possible to walk right up to oblivion, spit over the edge, and not fall into it. And the only heroes I've known did that, every day: wore their doubt not as armor but as ornament, a taunt aimed at all who would devour them, saying I have felt this poison inside for so long; swallow me and taste it.
It's not much of a battle cry. But words matter less than the lungs that move them. Fighter isn't a philosophy. Organizer isn't an aesthetic. Ally isn't an identity. Tomorrow, what we should have done will be worth exactly what it's worth now: wind, and not even enough wind to move a piece of ash from here to there.

So tonight: Be real. Tell your story and listen to oth-ers. Feel what you feel, and choose to act anyway, to show up, to resist.

Ask yourself and ask each other:
Of what future are these the wild, early days?

Let us braid all the threads between us into a wick.
Let the fire that was always there, waiting for this moment, finally find its way home.

Like, okay. Got all that. But you can’t make (good, effective) satire about giving up rights when 51% of y’all voted to give up rights in real gotdamned life and physical abuse shouldn’t be diminished and in a fucking punchline. Don’t pmo.
A shot of Tami Roman, wearing a bonnet & smoking a cigarette, pointing and saying “you don’t say it either!” to her Latina reality tv castmate who had just used the n-word when admonishing a WM for using the same word.

Aside from familiarity of Tami’s body language, the meme is fitting because even if we set aside WW’s long history of being the opps, trading their agency for love & proximity to power, etc. to give this one WW the benefit of the doubt that she wouldn’t be willing to give up some rights for “love”…nobody wants to hear that shit from them.

Tried listening to last week’s new music Friday playlist on Spotify and a song called 1965 came on
Jose Mourinho, a soccer coach, ripping off his headset in disgust like I did with my headphones when I heard that song

HR from Bad Brains is def one of those artists that have such a foundational impact on a genre that they become obscure (aside from people deep into the genre). There’s a documentary about his music and life that is free.99 on Tubi
Promo photo for the documentary “Finding Joseph: The HR From Bad Brains”. It is composed of two striking portraits of HR that have been merged equally, and transition smoothly, to create a singular image. One side is his closeup of his face as a young man. The other is him as an older man. The juxtaposition & smooth transition is symbolic of the change in his personality throughout his life and his deepening Rastafari beliefs throughout his life. He is staring straight forward to the camera which highlights the dramatic lighting of the photo. There’s a green, yellow, and red filter that reinforces the Rastafari theme. The movie is available to stream for free on Tubi or rent/buy on Apple TV+.

Wish I had the money & connections to make a drama with Mahershala and Jeffrey cause it would def be this. Daniel Kaluuya & Brian Tyree Henry would provide a little comedic relief.
Screenshot of a post from Twitter calling for Mahershala Ali and Jeremey Wright in an intellectual, brooding romance (or maybe with an element of like thriller or sci-fi involved) where they are both deep thinkers who have created a small, safe friend circle and a love that stands the test of time.

This thread is a masterclass in self-archiving. It’s so important for non-academics to do this as well. Reminds me of this:
"Start thinking of yourself as the archivist of your life. Reflect on and write about your beliefs and experiences. Collect sentimental things, label and organize them for generations to come. You happen to exist at this moment, the world will never be like this again. Cherish and archive it."

I hate when a scientist with an opposing view doesn’t give an alternative explanation. Like, okay, if it wasn’t brain tissue then what other organic material *inside someone’s skull* could have been fossilized/turned into glass? Lmk so I can go research and see if it’s plausible.
Screenshot from the CNN article that reads: Vitrification of soft tissue was "incredibly unlikely," said Alexandra Morton-Hayward, a forensic anthropologist at the UK's University of Oxford, adding that she was not convinced that the glassy substance was brain tissue. Morton-Hayward has compiled a unique archive of information about 4,405 brains unearthed by archaeologists. She was not involved in the research.
