Losing my SATURN 3 virginity tonight. Upon seeing me check it out the clerk at Vidiots said it was “everything you expect it to be.”

I confess to never having read the novel, but its odd to me this idea EAST OF EDEN didn’t already center around a complicated woman. Julie Harris walks off with all the honors, and the men are better when they’re onscreen with her.

Saw in the Crlterion account our college kid had abandoned some movies he’d started. I texted him to set him straight.

It begins. I think we were waiting for the daytime temperature to drop below 90.

We took the twins upto Griffith Park Observatory last night. Liz said I got too discursive on a related subject. “Discursive? How can you say that when I never even got to Gloria Grahame or Robert Wagner?!”

(There is however a whopper of an error in the preface.) 2/2

Enjoying this deep dive into the making of a film that usually brushed aside even though it was so obviously tampered with that it’s hard to gauge what its true shape or intentions may have been. 1/2

We thought after “The River” last week we’d continue with Renoir but Liz has become interested in Rumer Godden so…

Liz, who has excellent taste but usually wants to watch the new cultural conversation piece, surprised me last night by if we could watch THE RIVER. The tv was bursting with color almost before she finished the sentence. Then this morning: “What other Renoir movies should we watch?”

Radha Burnier in Renoir’s THE RIVER (1951).

Spoke to my friend Mitch McConnell this morning, the senior Senator from Kentucky. He's still recovering in the hospital. We talked for just shy of 20 minutes ... about IRAN, UKRAINE, the unfolding situation in MAINE, my visit to the TR Presidential Library, and even a little bit of Senate history

I don’t think I’d seen any of Jack Arnold’s westerns until this, a very curious watch for Independence Day weekend. Kuleshev gets quite the boost from casting a man who was said to have killed over 200 people as a hired killer.

My wife, when she saw this for the first time, blurted out, “This movie is ridiculous. How do you not date a guy who makes pickles?!” Also, quite the collection of playwright cameos.
