We must take on the hateful forces that seek to divide us. My statement on recent events in Belfast.

The knife attack in Belfast on Monday was truly horrific. My thoughts are with Stephen Ogilvy and his family, who deserve justice.

Targeting and terrorising innocent people because of the colour of their skin, including setting fire to their homes, has nothing to do with justice or a desire to keep communities safe, however. It is racist mob violence, which has been organised, enabled and whipped up by those seeking to profit politically and financially from hatred, fear and disorder.

Social media platforms who give money and reach to these individuals to promote their hate need to be held to account. They cannot be allowed to continue pouring petrol on the flames.

The disgraceful violence is a direct consequence of the normalisation of vile, racist rhetoric across the UK, which needs to be challenged far more robustly in our political discourse.

I welcome the steps the Prime Minister has taken to work with police and the First Minister of Northern Ireland. We must stand together to prevent further disorder, and to take on the hateful forces that seek to divide us.

🏡 Housing co-ops work. The problem is that UK law doesn't have a home for them. Without a proper co-operative housing tenure, co-ops have to work to legal structures built for something else, making them harder to set up, harder to scale, and harder to access. Let's change that.

Mainstream’s Interim Council sends its congratulations to Labour’s new Deputy Leader, Lucy Powell, whom we endorsed after a ballot of our members.

Lucy ran a positive campaign advocating for pluralism, democracy and a cultural course correction, pledging to bring members, affiliates and communities into Labour’s decision-making. Ending the two-child benefit limit, which we campaigned for at this year’s party conference, was also central to her campaign.

Lucy’s victory today is a win for Labour’s mainstream. It shows that the majority of our movement wants Labour to be open, participatory and inclusive. Members have rejected the hyper-factional, top-down culture culpable for the missteps of our first year in government. The failed experiment in political centralisation being pursued by a tiny group at the top of the party must now end. The low turnout in this contest is a sign of the disillusionment and plummeting morale that this culture is provoking.

The result of the Caerphilly by-election, where Labour went from first to third place, is a straw in the wind of what will happen next May and in the 2029 General Election unless the party has a major reset.

This result must mark a shift toward a broader, bolder politics within Labour. Only then will we be able to construct a transformative, democratic socialist programme for the country. Mainstream will organise to make this a reality. The alternative is a Reform-led government.
