"If that $1/word rate from 2000 matched today’s inflation, the average writer should be making about $2/word. But...the average reported pay rate has hovered around $1/word, and stagnant wages mean that freelance writers are functionally making less money now than they were 26 years ago."

Freelance journalism rates have barely changed since 2000
New data from the National Writers Union offers a glimpse into a bleak picture of decades-long wage stagnation in freelance journalism.

New one today for @defector.com: in the wake of the most recent declaration of reading's demise, I was curious what booksellers, almost always ignored by the post-literate prognosticators, made of such claims. Here's what they told me:

What Do Booksellers Make Of “The End Of Reading”? | Defector
If you haven’t yet encountered the cover story for the August issue of The Atlantic, I have some bad news to share: “The End of Reading Is Here.” It’s an intentionally provocative headline for a sligh...

Exactly that! I had to sign paperwork because state employees aren't allowed to donate more than 8 hours of their time outside of work towards volunteer causes. Also not allowed to take PTO for 6 months after the start date, sick time limitations, etc

I will add as a Texas employee that it is absolutely bananas how in-your-business the state is. I'm not allowed to volunteer my time more than 8 hours a week, etc.

INBOX: the last dedicated science reporter at The Wall Street Journal, @aylinwoodward.bsky.social, has left the newsroom. This came after the Murdoch-owned newspaper dissolved its Health and Science Bureau last October. NPR, CBS, and WaPo also gutted their climate desks in the last eight months.
After nearly five incredible years, The Journal's last remaining dedicated science reporter (that's me!) has left WSJ. Following the dissolution of the miraculous Health & Science Bureau last October, myself and a small numbers of others worked hard to continue our former team's legacy, but the time has finally come for me to move on.

I am deeply grateful for all of the opportunities this publication -- and the journalist community I met there -- has given me. From stories about T. rex lips to primate booze problems to shrinking brains, to Nobel Prize and NASA mission coverage, Jane Goodall's obituary, winter storm, volcano and wildfire smoke stories, I left no scientific stone unturned, working constantly to inspire curiosity and wonder in Journal readers during times of increasing turmoil and challenge. I met some of my closest friends, wrote for two of the most phenomenal editors I'll ever have the privilege of working with, saw Evan come home, and learned (in retrospect, naturally) the gift it is to be on a team of professional nerds who drive the cutting edge of health and science journalism in America while uplifting each other and their craft.

Well, this is your counterprogramming kid signing off. Not sure where I'll end up next, but don't be strangers y'all. In the meantime, I'll be coaching roller derby across the U.S., South America and Europe!

Moving to a new city and @desmoineslibrary.bsky.social has me so spoiled. What do you mean the library doesn't offer tools to rent? What do you mean there's no resin printer for patrons to use? What's the point of a library if it does not have board games for check out!?

I've been commissioned for a fun article with @sfwa.org about how scifi writers can get more "science" in their fiction! 🚀 I'd love to talk to other #scicomm professionals or scientists who want any excuse to share their work, and what their favorite example of science in scifi is 👀
A numbered list that describes: Step one - Pitch awesome idea (crossed out), step two - report it out (is highlighted)

a collective inward groan from the newsroom as soon as "Snowfall" was mentioned
From Nieman Lab: "The [Houston] Landing was “behind on embracing all the tools digital offers us, such as video, data visualization, [and] interactive story treatments,” Bhatia added. In an interview with Texas Monthly, he cited The New York Times’ 2012 multimedia story “Snow Fall” as the type of journalism he wanted the Landing to produce."
