From my book:
BUZZ OSBORNE: We named the band after this guy who worked at the
Thriftway. Melvin was a fucking asshole. He was an adult and was in
a position to give you orders. He was the kind of guy who would yell
at you in front of somebody else to try to impress them. Horseshit. We
wanted to call ourselves that because it sounded stupid. We liked the
inside joke.

Oh, the actual story (assuming this is true) is hilarious.
[The Breeders] cover of Sebadoh's "Freed Pig" originally wasn't meant to be recorded, and was something they'd learned as sort of an ironic joke. The Head To Toe EP was produced by J Mascis, and "Freed Pig" was written by Lou Barlow about his troubled relationship with Mascis while he was in Dinosaur Jr.., so the band thought it would be funny to use it to warm up in the studio. When Mascis walked in on them playing the song, he wasn't familiar with it, assumed it was an original, and was confused by the band's laughter when he said they should record it. Once the band explained, Mascis still liked the song, so he had it recorded anyway.

Elon Musk tweet: My son, Saxon, is so based that he would just order milk when we went to dinner in LA. This would always stun the waitstaff, as they had never heard anyone actually order milk!

He also unironically ordered a cheeseburger at a very uptight sushi restaurant that doesn’t even allow you to order supplemental soy sauce. When the waiter recovered from this request to reply that they don’t have cheeseburgers, Saxon said “Fine, I will have a hamburger.”

I bet if G.G. Allin died today he'd get more than a three-paragraph wire service obit in the Times.
Kevin Michael Allin, an East Village punk rocker known for his over-the-edge stage antics, was found dead on Monday in an apartment on St. Marks Place, the police said. He was 37.

Mr. Allin, whose performing name was G. G. Allin, apparently died of a drug overdose, Sgt. John McCluskey, a New York Police Department spokesman, said yesterday.

Mr. Allin, reared in Lancaster, N.H., recorded with several bands; the latest was the Murder Junkies. He was arrested during performances more than 50 times on obscenity or assault charges. During one on Sunday at a bar called the Gas Station, he reportedly fought with the crowd and smashed through a French door.

I still remember how much hate we got when we named Neil Peart No. 2 on Blender magazine's list of worst lyricists. (Sting was No. 1.) atthebarrier.com/2026/08/30/v...
I remember first learning of the existence of the French progressive rock band Magma from Blender Magazine when I was about twenty, from a feature about the most pretentious bands or most pretentious albums in rock history. Blender briefly dumped on Magma’s third studio album, Mechanik Destruktiw Kommandoh, derisively referencing the made-up lyrics and sci-fi themes of the record. I didn’t particularly care what some smug critic for Blender thought was pretentious, and the description sounded interesting, and a couple of years later I found a used copy at my local record store and picked it up.

This is a new one! Also, how the hell does Weezer have 20 albums??
Since the release of the Blue Album, in 1994, Weezer—the alt-rock juggernaut led by the singer and guitarist Rivers Cuomo—has been influential enough that it’s now almost impossible not to hear echoes of Cuomo’s yearning, melodic voice on contemporary pop radio, particularly in punchy, clever songs by Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift. This month, Weezer put out its twentieth studio LP, the Gold Album. Before Cuomo and I sat down to discuss it, he asked if I’d be open to reading some Shakespeare aloud together: specifically, Act I, Scene 7 and Act II, Scene 2 from “Macbeth.” Cuomo attended Harvard beginning in the nineties. He majored in English and took a course on Shakespeare. “I’m kind of obsessed,” he said. “I go see the same plays over and over and over.” We sat opposite each other at a glass dining table in a midtown hotel suite. Cuomo warned me that he was not a great dramatic reader, but his performance was serious, decisive, earnest.

Ugh, you're supposed to go to the gym in GTA 6, too?
Nelson ducked Jason into a gym, where he walked past people on treadmills and stepped into a squat rack. Unlocking higher weights requires working out and a mastery of technique. By pressing down on the controller’s triggers, players can manage the rise and descent of the movement. Flub the rhythm and it is harder to get out of the hole, which results in stamina drain. Success has a material effect on the character.

Even being the frontman of Weezer is a spreadsheet job these days.
Cuomo’s approach is methodical to a degree that feels antithetical to rock music; he has boasted that Google Sheets is integral to his process. (One spreadsheet, which he has named “The Encyclopedia o’ Riffs”, keeps track of all his unused and unfinished ideas and is legendary among Weezer fans.)
