The only player still around from Mohamed Salah's Liverpool debut is Joe Gomez – so it feels weird that Gomez coming back into the side signals the end of Liverpool being Salah's team. New for FourFourTwo www.fourfourtwo.com/person/playe...

Liverpool's post-Mohamed Salah era might have begun, with a strange twist in the way that the Egyptian King has lost his team

Granit Xhaka in that Sunderland team is a cheat code. It's up there with N'Golo Kante at Leicester, a world-class superstar making it look like it's 12v11 every week

This was never a problem in 2022/23 either, Arteta just reverted to a 3-5-2, who would sustain pressure until they scored. Arsenal have lost that somehow and if they can get it back, the natural inclination from opponents won't be to sit back, like they have they done for two or three years now.

Yesterday was the first time all season that Arsenal actually looked like carving open a deep block. They don't stretch opponents enough, there's not enough movement and it's too slow. It was much better in that second half and the left-hand side offered more width.

Mark White @markwhite.bsky.social · 09/11/2025

Pep Guardiola didn't defend in a 5-4-1 low block out of respect to Arsenal. He did it because he didn't rate them. City could have stayed in that shape for three hours and Arsenal would never have scored. Sure enough, the moment they pushed high and Martinelli had pitch to run into, Arsenal scored.

Do we need to have a conversation about Alonso picking up Pep's galaxy brain in big games gene?

Not a criticism, by the way, just didn't expect to see Camavinga pinning Robertson this season

June expectation: Xabi Alonso will make Real Madrid more structured November reality: Fluid 3-5-2ish shape with Valverde in the first line, Camavinga as a right winger, Bellingham floating and Vinicius as outlet 50 yards north of most of his team-mates

If a bigger team does sign Iliman Ndiaye – and I hope they don't – it has to be someone like Newcastle. Like Grealish, he needs a manager who will platform him with transitional chaos.

Semenyo centre-forward arc needed. Like Ousmane Dembele with the ability to make it stick serially. Would have him in a heartbeat at Arsenal

Galatasaray raised Slot by leaving Leroy Sane on the bench and holding Liverpool at arm's length. This is a superteam of discarded parts

Mark White @markwhite.bsky.social · 24/09/2025

Yes it's just Port Vale in the League Cup but Arteta's football is way too slow and predictable right now. Lack of movement, little to no overlap, lack of urgency and no one taking responsibility to force the issue. Newcastle away is a worrying next game.

I don't think I've ever seen an Arsenal performance with such a combination of dominance and comfortability be quite so fucking dreadful to watch hahaha

Respect to Aitana Bonmati – but bizarre that you can lose the two biggest finals in a year, see your pen saved in one, and take the Ballon d'Or in this day and age.

Mark White @markwhite.bsky.social · 22/09/2025

Eze still bedding in so it would've been between Trossard/Martinelli to hold width out left. Trossard is better in tight spaces than Martinelli, with Martinelli better when the game's stretched, and obviously the game started cagey before the spaces appeared. I get the logic but would've started Eze

120

Mark White @markwhite.bsky.social · 22/09/2025

Yeah, even having Jesus up front battles a bit better in the duel than Gyokeres

100

Mark White @markwhite.bsky.social · 22/09/2025

The lack of Ødegaard makes the decision all the more obvious for Arteta. Had he and Havertz been fit, Merino would've been nowhere near the lineup. Had just Ødegaard been fit, it's possible that even Gyokeres would've dropped out for Merino up top. It's a case of profile and what was missing.

220

Mark White @markwhite.bsky.social · 22/09/2025

Arsenal's lineup isn't a result of Arteta being cautious, it's a compromise for not having Havertz, who would ordinarily do the jobs of both Gyokeres and Merino. Gyokeres isn't a pressure valve to hold the ball up: Merino is there to win the initial duel, with Gyokeres there for the second ball.

Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh are the perfect wing pairing. One of them more measured, offering pausa and passing, the other a bull in a china shop who will destroy you on transition.

Reminds me of when Ten Hag used to play 2-1-7 because it worked against Floopity Hoonegran

Mark White @markwhite.bsky.social · 19/09/2025

I feel like I've bashed Ruben Amorim enough, but how can you decide you don't like your best forward after two games, watch him do well on loan, then sanction *another* loan with a *£26m* buyout!? Major, major red flags with his talent ID along with his system.

120

Mark White @markwhite.bsky.social · 16/09/2025

Doubt the boy at your fucking peril. Martinelli has something no one else in this squad does.

0101

Mark White @markwhite.bsky.social · 13/09/2025

An imperfect buildup structure encourages a high press. Often when your players are well-spaced and making the pitch as big as possible, opponents will sit off you more

000

Mark White @markwhite.bsky.social · 10/09/2025

Viktor Gyokeres at home against a barely coached Postecoglou high line at the weekend. We need a hat-trick at the bare minimum.
