Is this the first tangible action of the @plaidcymru.bsky.social government? Throwing trans patients under the bus because a Tory read a gender critical blog post? Really not a great look guys.

Burnham drops support for political funding cap aimed at curbing mega-donors
PM said he would set bar at £500k, but trade unions say funding reforms could undermine their ability to donate to Labour

Thanks Susannah, is there something I can read about that? Not that I don’t believe you but it’s strange it wasn’t mentioned in the original article (I’m sure they would have asked?), or any of the commentary that I’ve seen since.

No it’s not, but the alternative seems to be nothing at all, which doesn’t seem like a fantastic outcome for cyclists to me.

Mark Turner @markturner.info · 18/08/2026
“Building” is maybe an exaggeration, how much does it cost to put a bit of paint on the road? And what evidence is there that people won’t use it? If I see it I could be convinced, but this just seems like a worse outcome if we end up with the status quo. Where else is the money being spent?

Sorry, I am a man, so by all means disregard (Green Party member though tbf), but you seem informed on this so I have questions: What evidence? Have they proposed an alternative? How does this cycle lane, which no-one is forced to use, reduce net safety compared with the road that’s currently there?

They can’t though, because they’re also watering down net zero commitments and contributing to the warming. Just because they’re not as bad doesn’t give Labour a free pass.

Mark Turner @markturner.info · 17/08/2026
The mainstream debate is focused on it because it’s what Burnham is doing. He could very easily stop it.

Wondered what was inside the fake books they have in Ikea, fair to say you can’t judge this one by its cover!
The spine of a book that reads “Girls can score too!”The inside title of the actual book: “Social Militarisation and the Power of History”

Quite a read I’m sure!

There is also no evidence for the oft-repeated claim that Reform’s support is strongly linked to English immigration to Wales.
A graph showing that 29% of those born in Wales voted for Reform compared with 32% from the rest of the UK.

Mark Turner @markturner.info · 06/06/2026
This one stands out too, yet more evidence that Labour massively misjudged their decision to move right to placate Reform voters. To be fair Welsh Labour never really went along with that but UK Labour’s very visible failure doomed them all the same (among other factors, certainly).
A graphic showing the movement of voters from one election to the next. It shows, of those who left Labour, the vast majority went to other parties on the left, especially Plaid. The majority of Reform’s support came from those who already swung to the right (particularly the Conservatives).

Lots of fascinating insights in this: yougov.com/en-gb/articl... One that particularly caught my eye, ten years on from the Brexit referendum, the leave/remain split is as clear as it ever was (if not more!)
A screenshot from the linked article. It reads:

How Wales voted at the 2026
Senedd election:
by 2016 EU referendum vote
If there were a Senedd (Welsh Parliament) election tomorrow, which party would you vote for? % of 2,391 Welsh adults aged 16+ who were likely to vote

Underneath is a graph showing a stark difference in Senedd election voting by leave/remain votes. For example, among remain voters 48% went for Plaid and 10% for reform, among leave voters 17% went for plaid and 53% to reform.

This is not really like STV at all, and was never presented as such, I think that would have been a better option but here we are. They do claim it’s proportional though.
000
Mark Turner @markturner.info · 10/05/2026
Pretty good for December! What are your thoughts on the new voting system? I’m not that impressed from a proportional point of view, think you had pointed out the high threshold problem.
000
Mark Turner @markturner.info · 10/05/2026
Not really clear this is an improvement on the previous additional member system tbh, but I suppose it’s better than the system for UK general elections (but that’s a very low bar indeed).
000
Mark Turner @markturner.info · 10/05/2026
This electoral system is basically pretty crap in my view and clearly favours the bigger parties just like FPTP does. I suspect this was intentional as it would have favoured the governing Labour Party who introduced it, had their support not cratered so spectacularly.
100
Mark Turner @markturner.info · 10/05/2026
Lots of chat about the results but my overriding impression is this is a pretty much total failure of a so-called proportional system. A fully proportional result would be: Plaid - 34 (-9) Reform - 28 (-5) Labour - 11 (+2) Conservative - 10 (+3) Green - 6 (+4) Lib Dem - 4 (+3) Others - 2 (+2)

Truss only went because of pressure from her own party. The Republicans could do the same with Trump. The reason they won’t is because his cult of personality is the only thing holding them together, nothing to do with the system.
