The same people who praised Dan Burn’s headers against Mexico a few days ago are now calling Tuchel a coward.

A team goes into a positive game state and the manager makes defensive adjustments. If it works, he’s a genius. If it doesn’t, he’s a coward. That’s how football discourse works, isn’t it?

Before Embolo’s second yellow, Argentina’s build-up pass completion was just 83.9%. Before this match, they had averaged 92% at the tournament

It's really hard to generate threat if there is no balance between push & pull dynamics, which is one of the areas Morocco struggled with against France. Graph: @markstats.club

With David Raya in goal, Spain wouldn’t have conceded this goal. He would have intercepted the cross

Canada has done more in 15 minutes against Morocco than the Netherlands managed in 120 minutes. Koeman is an actual terrorist.

The beauty of stats and data visualization is that, after hours of work, you can finally prove the kind of thing everyone already knew: Argentina go *through* defensive blocks and Portugal go *around* them

here's a stat In the Premier League from 2021-25, on throw-ins taken from deep attacking areas, how many were delayed for at least 20 seconds from after the ball went out of play? 22% In the 2025-26 PL, what was the share of deep throw-ins with such a delay? 46% and in the World Cup? 14%

Please stop explaining momentum shifts only through hydration breaks. Game states still exist, and their impact is often bigger than anything else.

Twitter tactics bro: “It is so good for the future of football that we see more small countries at international level. More variety, new ideas and non-mainstream football.” Small countries: low block and counterattack.

Graph compares each PL team's last 9 games against the rest of their season. Since Michael Carrick took over, Man United are the most in-form team in the league, Man City drop to fifth by xG, and Liverpool struggle to convert third-best xG difference into points

As soon as Newcastle abandoned their 4-5-1 mid block and dropped deeper, they became considerably more solid defensively against Chelsea. No more free space between the lines for Palmer. Good adaptation. Chelsea need a better one-on-one specialist on at least one flank

You can suffer under pressure at St James' Park, fine. But how is your pass completion rate in buildup lower than a "route one" side's? One of the worst Barca performances of the season

If Inter stays brave tonight, they can leverage their biggest strength: effective buildup and press resistance. As PSG typically presses high m2m, opportunities to create artificial transitions will likely arise. Set pieces might offer another edge

Manchester United 2024-25 compared to 2023-24: They have a less effective high press, but overall open-play defense improved massively from "catastrophic" to "slightly above average". An open-play attack and buildup quality have not remarkably changed

"Glasner's defensive masterclass" looks like this by the way. Basically the worst game of the season

markstats @markstats.club · 17/05/2025
Crystal Palace is one of the most effective defensive PL teams. Their mid-block restricts opponents’ access to the final third and danger zones. However, today’s match was a complete contrast. Palace allowed 16 shots from the penalty box and 24 entries into the danger zone

Why won’t Carlo Ancelotti just let his players express themselves? 🙃
070
markstats @markstats.club · 04/05/2025
Chelsea excels at attacking space, creating fast-break opportunities through natural turnovers and artificially (baiting opposition press). Sharper decisions with the ball in the second half against Liverpool could have led to a couple more goals

Carlo Ancelotti: Gives his players flexibility and freedom to “express themselves” The players: Cross the ball into the penalty box instantly
