Happy to see my Sandhill Cities book displayed at the Urban History Association conference. For those interested in smaller and midsized cities and/or the modern US South, check it out at the Scholars’ Choice table in the book exhibit. #UHA25LA @lsupress.bsky.social

For those in #Cleveland, you can see me play with the Cleveland Winds this Sunday, Nov. 17. Why is there a moth on this poster, you ask? Because our portion of this joint concert with CSU Wind Ensemble opens with Viet Cuong’s “Moth.” Concert info: facebook.com/events/s/csu...
Concert poster with picture of moth at top, inset photo of guest trumpet soloist Ashley Hall-Tighe, concert info (available via link), and CSU School of Music logo

Today at 2pm, a new Ohio historical marker will be dedicated for Cleveland inventor Garrett Morgan’s recreational club (1924-1940s) for African Americans in Wakeman, Ohio.
Flyer with photo of Morgan, plat of Wakeman Country Club, Ohio History Connection logo, and small photos of historical marker and Morgan’s gas mask and traffic signal inventions. Text reads: Village of Wakeman. Join Us!! Ohio Historical Marker Dedication: Garrett Morgan’s Wakeman Country Club (1924-1940s). Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 2 p.m. Wakeman Community Park (Downtown), 9 East Main Street. Cleveland Inventor and entrepreneur Garrett Morgan sold his patent for the Traffic Signal to GE in 1923. This was instrumental in Morgan establishing the Wakeman Country Club, one of the earliest African American recreation clubs in Ohio. Celebrating with the Morgan Family.

It’s been a busy musical spring—6 band and orchestra concerts in the past 12 weeks. One more to go in 8 days.
