I remember watching SFR on TV when I was a kid, but I have no idea if it was the Canadian or the American version.

This sent me Googling about Swiss Family Robinson, and I ended up with so many TILs: • There was a TV movie of SFR in the 1950s starring Dennis Hopper & Patti Duke • Lost in Space was based on SFR • A Canadian and a US TV version of SFR both were aired in mid-1970s • The US version has Helen Hunt.

There’s a lot I really like about Rick Besto … but he’s really becoming “old man yells at cloud” these days. Or maybe “No, it’s the kids who are out of touch.” m.youtube.com/watch?v=pr6T...

I definitely do. And generally, a pro-German, austerity bias throughout the crisis.

Remember when “shadow stats” were a big thing, 15 years ago or so? The conspiracy that inflation was secretly high and the gov’t was hiding it. Of course, people could actually check. If inflation were really 10% or whatever, you’d expect prices to double every 8 years. But that would be nuts.

Good for Korea’s Culture Minister, Chae Hwi-young, sticking up for freedom of speech. Korea does have a history of letting politics and public sentiment affect these decisions sometimes … but good to see him take a stand. en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN2026...

A glowing stellar nursery 👶⭐ Webb’s infrared sensitivity has revealed the protostars & stars of NGC 7129, a stellar nursery that lies 3,300 light-years from Earth. In the centre, lies the massive star LkH(alpha) 234, which has carved into its cloudy surroundings 👉 www.esa.int/ESA_Multimed... 🔭 🧪
A young star cluster filled with many stars that display Webb’s unique eight-pronged diffraction pattern. At its center is a yellow star which sports the largest diffraction pattern. To the left of the star, there is a region filled with yellow dust and gas that extends from the star to the left border of the image. This yellow region extends from the bottom, covering about two-thirds of the image. The yellow region has several blue stars of different sizes embedded within. The top third, which lies outside of the yellow region, holds a few bright protostars, within dense gray gas. Those stars illuminate the gas, making it appear blue. A few red outflows from other protostars are visible above this grayish-blue region. To the right of the central star, there is a clumpy, flame-like plume of red dust and gas with protostars that emit a soft white light within. The plume is surrounded by more dense gray gas and dust. There are several background galaxies strewn throughout the image. Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI; Image Processing: A. Pagan (STScI)

I mean, the big bad guy is depression. That was a weird direction for a superhero movie to go in. Come to think of it, a lot of the MCU’s best films are the ones where the big climax isn’t solved by fighting (Thunderbolts, Doctor Strange, the latest Spider-Man).

I really think THUNDERBOLTS might be a top-3 MCU movie. Not one of the most “fun”. But interesting and substantial.

I’ve been blessed to have made friends in several major orchestras around the world. It’s really fascinating to get those kinds of deep insights into that music. Also fascinating to learn that some classical musicians are worse behaved than indie rockers.

Apple Classical is a godsend, imho. Love its curated playlists. I still dance around genres pretty randomly — rock, EDM, jazz, classical, world music. There’s so much good stuff. But I recognize some people don’t really care. And I’ve yet to see a pattern between between music taste and character.

One of the most insightful Asian movie critics I know only cares about classical music, and doesn’t listen to anything else. Which is a bit weird, in 2026. But that’s okay too. We’re all a big bag of randomness.

I think that’s true of all culture. Some people just watch movies and don’t really care about the art. Some people read books mindlessly. And TV … well, obviously. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing — we all interact with culture differently.

First moveable *metal* type, I do believe. Wood and other substances had been used prior. And as cool as the Jikji is, it’s important to remember all of Gutenberg’s other inventions that made his press so revolutionary — inks, new metal alloys, etc.

It’s about a 5 hour drive when there’s no traffic. KTX can do it in 2:15, but those tickets for Chuseok were sold out months ago.

Come to think of it, the last few Seollal and Chuseok holidays have been extra long, giving people more time to space out their travel. But this year Chuseok is just 2 days.
