We need full speed ahead with renewables, then for people to see the benefits through lower electricity bills. I also suggest taxing flights more and using this to lower rail fares, as it is ridiculous that a flight to Europe can cost less than a train to London.

It was a brilliant speech from Andy Burnham. I wish him and the government every success.

It is time loudcasting on phones was stopped. It is ruining so many journeys. Put up posters, make announcements, tell people to turn the sound off and if that doesn't work issue fines or ask the offending passengers to get off at the next station.

And, even worse, playing music or videos out loud without earphones. It is time train companies did something. Posters, phones, asking people to leave.

Something needs to be done. I was in France and the train guard asked (English) people playing a tablet out loud to turn the sound off. Phone calls must be made in the corridor, not the carriage. We need that here.

They should be asked by the train guard to turn it off, or get off at the next station.

In an era of dangerous misinformation and disinformation, we need the BBC (and the Guardian) more than ever. It should be funded properly.

That was rare though, whereas now everyone carries a mobile phone and it feels like respect is declining.

I bought some too and sometimes take them with me, but we shouldn't have to.

The train guards should require people to switch off sound as they pass through the train.

Mark @markinipswich.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
That should be the whole train. Standards should be enforced.

Mark @markinipswich.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The terms and conditions of their ticket should require them to travel quietly, and train guards should enforce that or ask them to get off at the next station.

It is time they put up some posters requiring headphones or earphones, as it is so irritating to have to listen to someone else's phone.

Mark @markinipswich.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
They should have one 'noisy' carriage on the train for people who have speakerphone conversations and play music out loud, and let the rest of us enjoy our journey in peace and quiet.

It is either very inconsiderate, or she wanted attention. It is time for train companies require people to wear headphones or earphones if they want to listen to music.

Yes, my suggestion would be the same. That would help towards the housing shortage, and more people living in the town centre will help increase retail demand and regenerate it.

I know of several people booking cheap return flights for day trips, seemingly despite the heatwaves and fires we are enduring. We should tax flights and subsidise public transport more.

Wetherspoons is big enough that this has a chance of making an impact on broader society, so this is welcome.

Flights are so cheap that people are now flying just for day trips. It is wrong that a flight to Prague is sometimes cheaper than a train to London.

Reform scrapping their climate commitments and getting rid of net zero is more than an ideological choice. Do they not care about our environment, or about local jobs and investment? Or do they not understand that amateurish political stunts have consequences?

That and taking down the flag of Ukraine shows what they are all about, at a time climate change and Russia are probably the biggest threats we face as a nation.

I'm really pleased to see the Arras Square project move forward. These upgrades will provide a real uplift to this area, with improved paving, disabled access, better lighting and CCTV, and new seating. Work starts in a few weeks' time and is expected to be finished by Christmas.

I am pleased to read about these improvements in town. We need to encourage people back into the town centre, which I appreciate is hard when so many people shop online these days. Signs of recovery though, and lovely to see more trees being planted.

Agreed, we are beginning to see improvement in the town after years of decline. I like the trees and planters which make the town greener and more nature friendly, keep it up. 👍

I prefer Aldi, as there are no apps, loyalty cards or collecting our data to worry about, just cheaper prices for everyone.

With so many people covering their gardens in concrete, paving, shingle or plastic grass, programmes like this are so important to remind us to think of making space for nature. 🐝

They should never even consider this. It is taking football away from the fans in the most direct way possible. MPs of all countries should step in and block this.

They should decide no, as it is absolutely wrong to take the game away from the fans of the teams, the people who made the clubs what they are.

I am growing euryops pectinatus for the first time this year, after seeing them flowering in December in someone's garden. Let's hope the survive the winter and give a good display.

Transport for London launches campaign targeting ‘headphone dodgers’
Posters to appear on Elizabeth line asking passengers to be considerate and not play music or videos out loud They are the scourge of the modern commute: passengers who play music or videos out loud. But amid widespread disapproval from fellow travellers, Transport for London (TfL) is trying to appeal to the better nature of “headphone dodgers” by asking them to “be considerate” and plug in. The new posters, which will start to appear on the Elizabeth line this week – and on other TfL services, including London buses, in the autumn – remind travellers to use headphones when listening to music or making calls. Train companies should do the same. I am forever having to move carriages due to people playing music, watching videos or making video calls without headphones so the whole carriage has to hear.

Taunton Deane Kale - The Backyard Larder
Truly perennial kales were once less rare in Britain than they are now. Most have vanished from cultivation. One that has survived is Taunton Deane kale from the West Country which was preserved in the gardens at Knightshayes Court in Devon. It is a strong growing plant which develops a woody trunk within a few […]

I also bought scabious half price from a local DIY store garden centre recently. There were three in a pot, so I separated them and they are now growing well in three parts of the garden.
