Good last rejoiner, very solid (not sarcastic) This guy was obviously in “debate me bro” mode not “I’m listening to reason” mode

Also many more of the people we are talking about are dangers to themselves than are dangers to others. Severe mental illness is a painful and difficult thing and hard for families and everyone involved. But we can do better care than we do now.

Yes Most people have little direct experience with severe mental illness, and that may be good and it’s also challenging for public policy as you note.

I will try to post my notes on it! There is some upfront cost but it is cheaper than paying for spraying—and avoids the wide-spectrum insecticides.

Yes Kenneth Rosenberg (like many others) has written about how in the absence of a well-functioning mental health treatment system jails often become today’s defacto forms of treatment; it’s not great that libraries also are doing it. www.sundance.org/blogs/mental...

And this comes on a day of other bad news about media. We as a society did not need to allow this media consolidation which puts not just CBS and TikTok but also CNN into the hands of the Ellison family. www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

(I can see a path where the Roberts Court strikes down this provision as compelled speech or something, but there’s no future of our democracy unless the Supreme court’s power is decimated anyway, so… hop on, folks)

The Federalist also hid its donors for many years. And pink slime news sites often do the same. Glad to see California doing this!

Humans want to know the identity of a messenger because that’s an important trust heuristic that we use naturally. It’s why PR effectiveness depends on the messenger.

Mark Histed @markhisted.org · 4h
Hiding the owners and donors behind news and media boosts the power of disinformation. It’s IMO why a lot of Reason, NRO, and Daily Caller donors give via a foundation that can hide its donors (thank Charles Koch and the Roberts Court for making that easier)

I think ownership disclosure — along with other transparency measures — are a really important part of a better media. When anyone sees a news story or video they should *immediately* know who owns that outlet.

Congrats to Rebuild Local News for their long-term advocacy. This is significant step forward for local journalism and a better overall media world! Also last I checked the bill req’d disclosure of the beneficial owners of news outlets. I put that into our democracy.policy whitepaper so 💪👏.

So… this person went into a nice sit down restaurant that serves coffee and espresso, brought a Starbucks cup, got called out, and instead of taking the L is arguing that the manager calls it “her restaurant” and that it’s all justified? Wild levels of entitlement

Not my usual thing to post but this is a truly deranged restaurant review
First, when we arrived I asked for a particular table near the front window so we could watch for an old friend who we were meeting. The table was unoccupied and unreserved. The hostess said she would ask "the boss". An older white lady arrived and looked at us reluctantly and said she would need it for a group arriving in 1.5 hours. This seemed odd and a little rude but no problem as we are in a hurry.
The food was ok, but nothing special. Particularly the spring rolls were devoid of flavor. The soups were the only positive note.
Our waitress was rather inattentive. At one point in the meal I caught the eye of "the boss" and asked for duck sauce. She came to our table and began to ask me about the Starbucks cup on my table. Was it mine? Didn't I think it was rude to bring outside food into "her restaurant"? I didn't think it was rude because I wasn't drinking it in "her restaurant", plus it isn't like they serve a Flat White in "her restaurant".
It was embarrassing to be treated like an errant school boy in front of friends. I told her I didn't appreciate her rudeness but she didn't care. It's "her restaurant" and she is "the boss"! Too bad she never learned customer service.

I also saw reporting that USAID had played a role in overturning South African apartheid. So it’s likely also vengeance for daring to promote equality and democracy when it disempowers white people

What is most important is that the federal government should NOT be ramming policies down on DC without consulting with the 700,000 people who live here. (DC statehood now.) @janeese4dc.bsky.social is very likely DC’s next mayor and the White House would do well to help her make DC better.

Dear Mr. President, our gold standard Mosquito trapping apparatus using carbon dioxide is safe and effective and controls the DC Mosquito population near a park (Here are a dozen trapped mosquitos; they will dry out and die in a few hours when I put this back.)

Here is more basic biomedical research on understanding how mosquitos smell and find CO2 to bite people. (This is close to my lab’s work, as we have studied amplification and filtering of input by E-E recurrent networks, it’s a thing.)🧪

Dear Mr President, it has come to the attn of the 700,000 citizens of DC that you are interested in mosquitos.🦟 Good news! Neighbors are already banding togthr to trap mosquitos (see @51st.news) And #NIH & #NSF do mosquito research. But you’re trying to kill them. web.archive.org/www.whitehou...
