Kudos to my colleague who took advantage of an ongoing Email reply-all storm at my institution to make everyone's day with:

Sunday morning Ethel bagging in the Peak District. Lots of geological sights, a good trig point, and then a pint and a packet. Wardlow Hay Cop, high above Cressbrook Dale. Ethel number 37/95.

Using a simple delta rule (Rescorla-Wagner) tweaked so that the associative strength of the common elements is weighted by its exposure-dependent activation we can simulate our results, showing latent inhibition, and its reversal:

Mark Haselgrove @markhaselgrove.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
To explain this, we propose that novelty and familiarity are common elements, permitting generalization between context and cues. As stimuli are exposed, rather than become less salient overall, activity in one element is replaced with another:

When the context (operationalsed as distractors) sustains familiarity, then learning is more successful to a novel than a familiar cue - latent inhibition But the opposite is observed when the context sustains novelty, ever changing - reversed latent inhibition (see also: Haselgrove et al., 2025)

Other times you are looking miles away and either hours ahead or behind you on your walk, thinking about the bigger picture of your route, or even just appreciating the view.

Sometimes you are looking no further than a few meters ahead, working out where to place your feet so you don't sink in a bog or tumble over a rock.
Flagstones sunk into moorland heading off into the distance, running adjacent is a dry stone wall and heather.

Hi, my name is Alfie. I like to stand in my water bowl and then flick water over the floor. Can anyone explain to my owner why I do this?

In the paper we suggest that novelty and familiarity are representational elements shared by stimuli and context and which can compete for associative strength, just like any other element. I pushed this idea through the Rescorla-Wagner model to simulate our experiment:

Tagging the excellent @jialinshi.bsky.social who ran this exp. The full time scores are now in. We reproduced Haselgrove et al. (2025). When contexts sustain familiarity learning is more successful to novel than familiar stimuli (LI). When the context sustains novelty, though, the reverse emerges.

Mark Haselgrove @markhaselgrove.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
Our first pilot with these stimuli shows we are again seeing more successful learning about a preexposed (i.e. familiar) stimulus than a non-preexposed (i.e. novel) stimulus.

They look weird, but are great stimuli for studying novelty and familiarity, and come with a load of metrics to balance the cues on.

Remembered, today, this classic bit of figure captioning from the original Thatcher illusion paper in 1980 by Thompson. Was this the peak of entertaining figure captioning?

Walking into work this morning with a general sense of reluctance and nausea. Today 2797 members of staff will receive letters informing them that they are at risk of redundancy. By my guess somewhere between 60 and 70% of academic staff.
