I was idly browsing through the search queries on Google Analytics for one of my websites. I'd love to know what prompted this pair of searches.

If Andy Burnham really wants to do something good for the country he should appoint a Minister for Drought. It worked for Jim Callaghan in 1976.

The real question is, why did we make it up? How did we decide it was better than what it replaced? What are the necessary preconditions for coming up with something that will replace it in turn?

My Fitbit app updated this morning to the new Google Health app. It's awful. Missing functionality, poor UI design, lacking customisation options, at least one really in-your-face bug.

Profit margins aren't a matter of opinion, they are a matter of fact. And the majority of respondents to that survey have gat the facts wrong.

Just heard a classic candidate for Colemanballs. Context, I'm watching Southampton v Ipswich in the EFL on Sky. Ipswich won the ball in their own area and pushed forward for a rapid counter-attack. Commentator: "The Blues are literally like Red Arrows".

Slightly unfortunate typo in the BBC's story on the Covid report. I asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot to generate an image of the UK playing a huge roll.

One of the bizarre things about Trump's social media posts isn't the content, dumb though it is, it's the way he signs them off. "Thank you for your attention to this matter". Sounds like an email from a middle manager complaining that staff are leaving empty sandwich wrappers on their desks again.

I entirely agree. Test bookings should be non-transferable and tied to a licence number. Cancellations in advance get the fee refunded and the test goes back into the pool to be available for someone else to book. No-shows pay for the test they didn't take. Simples.

Buses, like trains, should have delay repay. Not necessarily every bus - it's not really necessary for high-frequency urban services when the next one will be along soon. But when there's only one bus an hour, and the bus is late (or cancelled), there should be some redress.

Watched the first instalment of the new David Attenborough series, Kingdom, this evening. One of the recurring features is a family of wild dogs. If they go the whole six episodes without once mentioning them crying out in the night, I will be very disappointed.

But the tax system itself is the biggest problem, not the people paying tax. As I'm sure Angela Rayner would now agree. At least, I hope so. 6/6

Of course we should still go after those who deliberately cheat the system for personal gain. And when mistakes are discovered, it's right that they are corrected. 5/6

Mark Goodge @markgoodge.com · 06/09/2025
If something good comes out of this, it will be that Rayner, and her colleagues, recognise that taxpayers are not the enemy, to be stung for every possible penny. And that it's admirable to want to do the best for your family, even if you don't always get it quite right. 4/6

Mark Goodge @markgoodge.com · 06/09/2025
What is her fault, though, is that she's spent her entire political career demonising other people who are also grappling with the complexity of the tax system and not always getting it right. And that's where the allegations of hypocrisy stack up. 3/6

It's not her fault that HMRC's rules on stamp duty are arcane and counterintuitive. I'm sure plenty of other people have been caught out by this particular gotcha, too. 2/6

Mark Goodge @markgoodge.com · 06/09/2025
I don't think Angela Rayner's tax affairs are particularly morally culpable. Yes, she should have obtained professional advice, and yes, not doing so amounted to a breach of the ministerial code. So resigning was the right course of action. But...🧵1/6
