I think that for some men, there's something terrifying about trans women, which they can't even understand or articulate, so all the right-wing talking points feel natural to them. I see it even in generally decent leftie men.

More than ever, rich property owners are spending huge sums on full-grown oaks, palms and baobabs. They don’t have the time or patience to watch them grow.

The really scary thing is how many people buy this shit. You can probably even get Grok to write an explanation of why it's true, complete with fake references.

It's also these countries' kleptocratic elites that most vigorously resist efforts to move rapidly towards a just transition. It's much harder to capture all the wealth and power in a diversified economy with clean, distributed energy resources.

The NYT notes that the vile Plymouth County, Mass., district attorney who decided to try Lindsay Clancy for first-degree murder, not even ceding enough ground to allow for a bench trial, is running for reelection unopposed. But you're assuming that any person who wants more housing in Somerville MUST support a 25-story tower in Davis, period. No downsizing, no criticism allowed. So you are in fact labeling all Copper Mill critics as NIMBYs. It's absolutist and quite tiresome.

Marion Davis @marionsd.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
That's your view and you're entitled to it. Lots of very reasonable people disagreed. The whole "if you don't support every proposed project at its maximum potential size, everywhere, you're a NIMBY/ignorant/stupid" stance is how you divide Somerville on a priority 90% of us share.

I'm hoping this is yet another example of polls overstating support for DSA candidates. I myself will be voting enthusiastically for Christine Barber, an extraordinarily effective legislator – and if she weren't in the race, I would've voted confidently for Matt McLaughlin. #somervillema #mapoli

Which begs the question: why? The facile answer is evil NIMBYs. The real one is it's become insanely expensive and onerous to build here, leading most developers to avoid us. We don't lack for land (including lots of totally uncontroversial parcels).

Marion Davis @marionsd.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
It wasn't just a handful of pissy NIMBYs. The neighbors were genuinely divided, and I don't blame Jake for not putting his thumb on the scale (though I do see how this could be seen as effectively letting it die).

Stupid comparison. Agriculture needs massive changes, no question, but that doesn't mean that AI data centers are good or even harmless. Your mockery of people who care about them, as if we had to choose only 1 issue to focus on, tells me you're arrogant and narrow-minded. Unfollowing.

Democrat-run states do horrible things, too, though, and I think a key reason is that centrists are keen to show they're reasonable, prudent, never helping the undeserving. We could be modeling a better, more just way, but simple and easy doesn't come naturally to our electeds or bureaucrats.

In short: Benefits for the poor have a gazillion barriers you must overcome to prove you deserve them and you're not committing fraud. Lowrey has an idea why: anti-Black racism. And with broad-based benefits, Republicans' desire to make Americans resent (or else not see) the government.

This was a big thing for a while in DEI training, separating whites from BIPOC folks. The idea was that BIPOC folks shouldn't carry the burden of teaching everyone about racism, and whites needed to examine their privilege. But in practice, I've seen it be super divisive and marginalize Latinos.

Hiring well-paid and empowered tech support overseas could also help, of course, but I don't see that actually happening. The no-bull, just fix problems approach of effective US-based support teams is hard to replicate. Of course, as long as you staff adequately and treat teams with dignity.

Marion Davis @marionsd.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
If AI makes it possible to return tech support to the US, with the savings from AI handling low-complexity queries "justifying" the extra cost, orgs could dramatically improve service, actually solve problems, and avoid the massive ill-will that the outsourced systems routinely create. (2 of 2)

I just had a 😵‍💫🤬😩😵‍💫🤬😩 experience with a major international org's tech support team in India that made me wonder if a US-based team + AI wouldn't actually be better. I hate AI support, but these overseas teams are consistently god-awful, long-winded, inefficient and useless. (1 of 2)

It's a really stupid way for publishers to identify actual good authors and book ideas. But I'm sure it saves them on marketing, and that matters more than quality... The value that well-followed authors like you and @scalzi.com and others provide by spotlighting new authors, though... huge!

They did that? JFC. I can't imagine how any human, of any political stripe, could think that's OK. Such a violation. And without meaning disrespect (I'm not "all politicians are bad" by any means), it takes some amount of arrogance to run for office. You have to believe you're particularly smart/noble/principled/effective/worthy of holding power. So admitting ignorance and being vulnerable must be harder for them.

Constituents will generally buy/go along with what officials say unless it conflicts with specific things they care about. E.g. keep trans kids out of sports? Sounds reasonable to "protect our girls." If they haven't heard trans perspectives, or know firsthand, they won't see it as discrimination.
